***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Rebecca...I have a blue Cochin roo for you that will be old enough this Spring for breeding. Remember I promised you one of the Roos that would hatch from Bo's eggs purchased in Newcastle. I'm assuming you are continuing with your Cochin cross breeding project even with the losses.

It's official. My blue and brown layers are on strike. Green egg layers UNITE!!

Thank you both for being willing to part with your gorgeous boys! all 3 of them are settling in peacefully. They even have a little anterage of girls following them around already. Her is a peek of them in the coop and the yard.

Thanks again ladies and to everyone else who responded to my request!
Thank you so much for the pictures!!! If I could find a home like yours for birds I couldn't keep I'd sure feel a whole lot better about letting them go. I love it.

I need to ask OKracefan but I'm pretty sure his girls are Blue so that would make these eggs Lemon Blue babies since the Brown Red is the daddy.

Here's the girl from the single egg I hatched from the Brown Red boy and his hen before OKracefan took him last July, her name is Lillith, she's not 3 mo old yet-I adore Lillith! Then a picture of her parents I just now took. I really am glad to have this boy back. So far he's been just fine with me, the 2 times he'd come at me me last July was when he was in with a hen. So I won't be giving him any hens until he can prove to be a gentleman to humans. It's not beneath him to eat raisins I give him though.
I just couldn't resist a few other pictures haha! The 2 Orps are the 2 I got from Bill at POOPS when they were a day old. I'm in awe of the temperament on these Orps and the 6 I got from him the other day. So gentle and sweet to each other and other chickens. Then my Gold Laced Cochin who all of a sudden became an attention hog the past month. This girl didn't want anything to do with me til a month ago and now I can't keep her off my lap or out of the camera lens.

And my Orloff girls are getting so big! They're 3 months old this week-

And my sweet Splash Cochin girl from my very 1st hatch. I only have *2 girls left from that hatch last year.

Ok, I'll quit hogging the cyber space!

MJ don't feel bad hauling hay in the car. One of DH work friends put a deer in the back of his civic. Said it wouldn't fit so he had to cut it in pieces. My comment was guess your not married hugh?

We collected 2 eggs today. Anyone want to have a pep talk with my girls?

Mitzi,
There is no such thing as too many picture4s of chickens. Here are some of mine - ok, the last one isn't chickens but it is chicken related

Lavenders! I love your big Buffs, too :) I never used to care for the Buff color until I got my Orpingtons last summer. Now I think it looks like butter and is the prettiest color.
You've even got the dog perplexed with the straw lol

If my LF Buff Cochin ever starts laying again I will hatch those. Also when my bantam Lavender/Self-blue Cochins, Wheaten Maran and LaFletche pullets start laying I will hatch them too. My garage brooders will be busy (hopefully) There is no moreration in chickens!
There is no such thing as moderation with chickens. Build bigger coops, get more land.
I still have two LF blue cochin hens so if you get any cockerals that need homes, there is a place here. :)
I went by a place today that sells punpkins, fancy squash and chrisanthymums and ask if they had any pumpkins that they throw out because thay are starting to go bad or are too ugly to sell. Of course "ugly" squash is all the rage and there are some pretty neat varieties out there. They gave me 5 large pumpkin/squash that they had just put in the trash. All were a bit spotted but fine for the birds and they are enjoying them right now.
That is a great idea! There are a lot of pumpkin patches around, I think I am going to go hit them up.
Someone posted this card on the Heritage breed thread and wanted to know what they were. The answer is Malinois Kalkoenkop or Belgian Cuckoo Malines or Meschels. I was intrigued and found that there are two possible sources here on BYC...a lady in the UK and a possible breeder in California. I've emailed the person in California to see if she still breeds them.....
Feathersite.com has actual photos of the birds....

Those are cool birds, especially with the feathered legs.

Rebecca, good to "see" you here. Have missed you. Sorry to read about your birds. That's a HUGE loss!
Thanks Betsy! Life has been so crazy and am hoping things will get less hectic. How is everything in your neck of the woods.
I would place ad's in wanted sections of Craigslist under OKC and Tulsa there are other areas in Ok. as well, Or you can build one of your own Bfrances built his and so did Al and me as well, I doubt unless it was one really super great deal on a fully working one that I would even consider it I am in the process of building my second one, this one won't have a automatic egg turner in it just going to use it for hatching but it's all the same and a lot cheaper than buying one, I found a good deal (free) on a Sobe drink display box with a glass front, it will work out even better than the first one I built out of an old fridge, just a thought :)
Bill is right you can build your own for a fraction of the price with much more room. Good luck. The other option is to get some bantam cochin or silkie hens. They are broody machines. Hatched everything from chicken to peafowl eggs under a cochin hen. I have as good as hatch rate as anyone with an incubator.

Built another small coop and run for my babys today, 2 silks 2 Bahamas and 1? ?. Hope its not too cool for them.
oh and cleaned the hen house and redone the roost. My wife says I spoil my girls.

We only got 13 eggs yesterday, and 27 today.. You might have to threaten instead of pep talk
