***OKIES in the BYC III ***

We don't really keep many bantams so I am unsure Nana.
Taron went out to start feeding & tending to the birds tonight & handsome rooster (yes that is his name) was face down in the dirt barely hanging on. He is our pretties friendliest RIR roo. He always would run up for a treat anytime anyone is outside. Taron is so upset she sat & held him & tried to doctor him for a good hour while Alexis & I tended to the birds. He is still hanging on, but honestly I have no idea what is wrong & he doesnt look good at all. I dont expect him to make it through the night. We butchered the others yesterday of course!
The weather today was awesome. Sad it will turn cold again this weekend.

Mitzi I just saw your post. I don't believe there will ever be a day you stop building pens, unless you run out of land. You heart is to big & there are way to many pretty chickens in the world.

Conbgrats on the duck eggs!

Spent time earlier today busting up the d'Anver pairs until spring since the fertility begins to drop in the fall. Also spent time cleaning and replinishing the gallon waterers. Many of the early summer project pullets started laying this week and there were three new girls in the nest boxes.
Then we spent a couple of hours today under two pecan trees and between us picked up 7 gallons of native pecans.
When we got back, found my Black Rosecomb roo laying in the pen with his hen sitting beside him. He had died, his comb was blue looking. She has been calling for him since I removed him. I'll go out later and pen her with the two other Rosecomb girls.
Do some banties have heart attacks like some of the large breeds?
Oh I am so sorry. :(

Christina...so sorry to hear about Handsome. Taron must be heartbroken. It's hard when there is no explanation.

Thank you Kass.

Thanks Mitzi, the little hen has never been apart from her roo. I left them together. I split up the breeding pairs taking them out of their breeding pens. The Rosecomb pair has always been in the brooder room and go out each day to free range with the big flock. Then they go inside together and rooster together on a roost bar in an open floor pen..a really sweet couple.
All the bantam roos are together to work out their differences before I put them back with the flock...less stressful on everyone else.
All the hens are together with the other young birds like before I put them in breed pens. The girls transition easier than the boys. Once the boys are settled, they will go back with their flock and any eggs laid will not be incubated.

That is so sad. Yes, banty roos can suddenly die too. My first Mille Fleur Cochins roo died like that too. :(

Oh Nana and Christina I am so sorry to hear about your roos. Poor chickens it seems when something goes wrong it goes wrong fast! Christina that is rare in a RIR to be that sweet as I am sure you know lol. We have one RIR roo that is sweet like that. Big Red takes care of his girls and is quick to get on to the other 2 roos in that pen if they start giving the girls a hard time.

Now I remember why I hate daylight savings time, it is dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home!!!! I hate this!!! I won't get any time to spend with the birds Monday-Thursday now that the time change has happened.

Jack's little bantam cochins are settling in pretty well. They have to stay in quarentine for a while just to make sure they are as healthy as they look. He did take his little buff bantam cochin boy and put him in with the new girls. I am sure that little roo is in hen heaven! LOL He went from the batcholer pen to 11 girls to call his own for a while lol.

Oh Christina I have someone looking for grown Chocolate guineas do you have any you want to part with? I told him I would ask around.

Well gotta get busy and work that is what they pay me to do, lol. Hope the cold holds off long enough to get some chicken chores done Friday. But our church has been put on stand by, by the Red Cross as a shelter because of the weather this weekend. I am sure hope they are just being on the safe side.

Cathie I don't think we have any spare guineas. When I counted the other day I didn't try to count colors only guineas. If we are heavy in males in a certain color then we may thin out. Crazy thing is I didn't sex them at all this yr when we picked our keepers. Josh was working & I wasn't feeling well so I just let Taron take care of everything.
We lost the roo last night. I have never been able to save a bird that looked as far gone as he. He is the only RIR I have ever had that was so laid back. He was seriously different than any other.
Goin to have cranky kids today. Had them stay up for all the election coverage, even president Obamas speech.

Taron has had to learn some hard lessons lately about animal raising. I feel so bad for her going through everything she's going through. The chickens, the goat.....

I wish something like that would work for me. I'm too paranoid about mixing different chickens though. It would be WW3 if I put all mine different hatch groups together.
