***OKIES in the BYC III ***

If you ever get up Tulsa way I have Ameraucanas. My EEs are not flighty though, so it may depend on what breeds you use in the cross. Mine are Ameraucana roo X RIR and Black Austrolorp hens.
Thanks, we try to get up that way alot in the spring. We have friends that own a racetrack in Springfield,MO and we live in Wellston so go right through Tulsa. I would love to buy a few pullets for my layer yard. I have to many yards for breeding pens but the roo in my layer yard (keep him in there to keep dh from putting him in the freezer, lol) is a big Buff Orpington. He is such a sweet guy I couldn't part with him. I am not picky on what they look like my layer pen is a mix of 2 EEs (hatchery birds), 1 blue andelusion, 1 golden salmon marans (she didn't feather out correctly), 4 black stars, 3 buff orpingtons (don't have great body type for breeding). So it is a real mix in that pen.

Hi all,
My family lives in Norman, and thanks to the new ordinance being passed we are now allowed to have a coop. Our plan is to start with two chicks. This is a completely new adventure for us, but we are really excited. We hope to start in February when Atwoods has their first batch of chicks come in. We are planning on just ordering a prefab coop and putting it together in the backyard. Any and all suggestions are welcome. We are thinking Leghorns as of right now, just because of egg production and what appears to be a good breed to start with. If you have better suggestions as to where to get chicks than Atwoods, please let me know!

So glad you found us! Welcome! RetiredArmyWife (she hasnt posted in a while I don't think) purchased a cute premaid coop from Atwoods, I remember seeing them on sale for about $200 I think. I did see some coops that were used for $75 yesterday on craigslist. Be sure to get a coop that is going to be large enough to hold the max chickens Norman will allow, it will save you money & headache in the future. Also you should get an assorted flock, IMO. Not sure if you have children, but even adults love colored eggs. So at a min I would get a chocolate egg layer, along with brown, blue, green, maybe an olive egger & if you still have room then you can get a white egg layer. When yo go to Atwoods often you have no idea what you are getting, the box of chicks arrive with over a dz types in one box . When you are ready for chicks I know several on here will be more than happy to point you in the right direction of locals that are hatching chicks.
The Green County Show is coming up, it would be an awesome chance to see lots of birds. Not sure if there will be chicks for sale though. Maybe someone wil chime in & share more info.

Let the addiction begin. You can find all kinds of chicks on Craigslist. If you are looking for opinions on breeds well I think everyone is partial to what they raise. Some things you might want to consider when looking for the breed you want is space for the birds and temperament. I love my big birds but I have lots of space for them and they are super friendly. I don't have to worry about them chasing my little kids around.

Welcome!
I second the warning of addiction. I am newish to the yardbird world and I'm ready to have more ASAP.
You can buy birds from Craigslist, Facebook groups, swaps, and members on here.
This forum has soo much info in te threads I would just search different keywords and poke about.
There are lots of upcycled coop ideas around here too. :)

I also second the warning about Atwoods breeds.
I have a lovely black australorp I purchased there. I love her and she is super friendly, but she was labeled as a Dominique. *shrugs* I'm not trying to breed or anything so I'm fine with what happened. :)

I also warn against buying at chicks from Atwoods! There should be a poultry auction this weekend in Blanchard and they will probably have chicks there. The Newcastle Auction was last Saturday night and they had plenty of chicks and is not even hatching season yet. I would do some research as to what breed of the chicken that you want and find a reputable breeder and buy from them. I have Change breeds several times but the last couple of yrs I have stuck with Cochins. I like the Easter Eggers also. Good luck.

I have bought chicks from Atwoods several times. The only ones that have ever survived were 5 naked necks that I bought 3 years ago. Since then I have always bought from breeders right here on the Okie page. Maybe a little bit more expensive, but the quality and health of the bird are so much better. Do your research and figure out which breeds you might be interested in and let us know. I think we have most breeds covered through people on this thread. Everyone here is more than willing to help each other out!

We've only bought from Atwoods once last fall and the four birds we got are all healthy and happy ... but who knows if they really are the breeds they were supposed to be. We didn't really care, we just wanted something other than what we had that would add to our brown egg laying flock and that's what we got. They are the friendliest of all our birds. However, if you're only going to get two birds, it might be better to look at an auction or talk with some people on here who have the breed you want.

In other news ... here's a new pic of the FOUR baby turkeys we have.

From left to right - Johnny, Ed, Agua, and Pogo. In this pic Johnny, who was born fourth and laid on his side for over 12 hours without trying to stand up, is leaning still in this pic but by noon today he was no longer leaning and is hopping all over the place, eating and drinking and making a mess out of the food. Go figure. We ended up helping him out of the shell and once we did we realized he was so BIG he couldn't move in the shell at all. I'm totally smitten.

We're going to do another round of turkey eggs in the bator, 20 this time, and then see if we can get some Dominique eggs and try hatching them.

They are adorable. It will be funny if Ed turns out to be a girl.
