***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Wouldn't count on that!!!!! When I planted a whole patch of sunflowers the greedy wild birds scarfed them all up before the chickens could get one seed. I really didn't mind the chickens are well fed and the wild birds need to eat too, but I have heard you can bag the flowers after pollination while the seeds are maturing.
humm... when i grew some a few year back right next to my house the wild birds didn't touch them. but maybe it was be cause it was so close to the house.

PocoPolo, really like the geometrical on the bead projects from your students. Papier mâché was a project my students really got into both in middle school and high school. In hig school we made armatures for statuary figures out of wire, wood and cardboard. There were some really nice pieces. Some students used photos of historical pieces, animals or made drawings. A few made modern art pieces. Wish I had kept a photo file, but left it for the new art teacher.

Kass, sunflowers are great. When I grew the mammoth stripes a few years back,..had to use a ladder to put paper bags over the seed heads. Small slits in the bag allowed the flower to dry without too much moisture in the bag which would have ruined the seed. If I grow them again, I'll use those net bags to keep the wild birds off them and dry out the seeds.

had a broodie hen hatch out two eggs that were the remaining two out of 12 eggs I put in the incubator for Easter...the rest were bantie eggs and these were two LF chicks that I included. Instead of putting the eggs in lockdown put them under the hen. The lone bantie egg disappeared the next day..didn't really think it would hatch since it was questionable. One is a CW and the other will be a blue from pen 11....the only one from the Blue Birchen roo that died.

We have had drizzle all morning so far with one short shower....looking forward to seeing if the forecast for 3 inches comes true...we really need full ponds going into summer.

Praise the Lord for the rain! My chicks just floated by and I thought it was an ark!

It's a good thing my chickens are pretty b/c they aren't very bright! They have plenty of dry places to stay today a nice big coop, and the complete area under the coop all nice and dry, but I went out there to check on them and they are a flock of drowned rats. Their food is in the dry places there is absolutely no reason to get out in the rain.

The gord shade is awesome. I hope to do a similar thing w/ morning glories this year since my run top wouldn't support the weight of the gords. It is a run for babies so it is shorter too then yours.
how do you get morning glories to grow? i tried from seed one year and nothing grew.

i bought some mammoth russian sunflowers seed and some marigold seed at walmart this after noon, hope the chickens like them.

I didn't do anything special, just put the seeds in the ground and they took off like crazy. I had never tried them before last year b/c my Gma said they were impossible to grow here, then a couple of people on this thread were talking about how easy they were so I gave it a try.
