***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Haven't been on here in a while due to all the craziness of the storms. I will like to ask for prayers for my family. We lost my cousin Friday night due to the tornadoes that ripped through El Reno. He left behind 2 little boys. He also had 3 brothers. He was the baby of the family so it's definitely been a rough couple of days. On the upper hand, my last shipment of chicks came in last Wednesday. Barred Rocks. They're all doing really great. Also got our first bottle calf of the year.
I am so sorry for your loss. Your family is in our prayers

What a day. I lost one of my best egg layers a RIR named ninja and I have a red star injured named Rosie. She has a very bad injured wing. I put vetercyn on it and have her in medical room. I also have a very scared and injured male mallard duck in there with her. Think he is more frightened than anything.
I am hurt and saddened by what has happened today. My egg flock is slowly diminishing and I refuse to buy store bought eggs to eat. I sure do hope Rosie pulls through tonight. I only have two hens left out there and two eggs a day to eat and bake with is not enough.
I do have my silkie coop but they are show quality and those eggs I hatch.
And in coop number 3 is bannies and Cochins and polish and I hatch those too.
On the plus side I just hatched out 8 buffs and RIR last week but they will take months to grow and lay eggs.
I need to find some more grown hens. Soon. Looks like I see me in an auction in the near future.

Is the Newcastle auction this weekend?

FowlT.. Nice looking young bird dont no breed...
Thanks Michael. I've always liked Marans, but ever since I saw these at Okieridges old place they've been moving to the top of my favorite list. I am enjoying their personality too. Here's a Pullet pic.

Ceocka sorry about the losses in your flock. The Cement auction kicks off this Saturday or June 15th you can catch the Newcastle sale. Another good option is Michael D. He usually has nice birds a available.

I'm sorry to hear about everyone's losses and weather-related problems.
I marked out areas in the backyard for a coop & run, but one of our trees blew over from Friday night's weather. We also discovered that the house floods a bit with heavy storms.

I realized I have absolutely no idea where to get chickens. I would prefer not to go to an auction.

How far away from the garden should the chickens be kept? I'm just worried about salmonella. I know not to put the manure directly on the garden, but is there a risk of infection with rain runoff?

Does your garden have raised beds?
Do you know what breeds and ages of chickens you might be after?

on the injured birds, i would put them on a general antibiotic while they heal- and neosporin, ina quiet enclosed area to help them with the stress of it
