***OKIES in the BYC III ***

OKraceFan--- If a snake attempts to eat a chick it will normally be stretched out looking, if that makes any sense. My thought would be Cocci. We had one battle with it. They go down hill so fast, only symptom was bloody stools.

Nana hate that your dear goose didn't return. So sorry!

Been so busy here with house stuff. Think sheetrock goes in next wk. We really wanted it to start today, but the contractor drilling the wells for our geothermal unit is behind schedule. So excited & exhausted at the same time.

Did I miss anything good at auction? Never heard a report of the Cement auction last wk, did anyone go?

i would add apple cider vinegar to the water, it keeps the bacteria from forming, helps their immune system
Be sure the ACV is natural with "mother". Not the regular kind (pasturized) of ACV. I have found the ACV with mother at my local Walmart. They have just started carrying it here I believe, because I had never noticed it there before, but I could be wrong.

I have lost 5 hens in the last week, poof, one day they were there and the next day not! I have 2 big neighbor dogs that run loose and have seen them in my pasture between the road and the chickens small pasture, and I'm thinking they may be the culprits. I just hate it because the first 2 that went missing were the 2 that my granddaughters had 'adopted' as theirs, and now I have to tell them they are gone. The rest of the hens aren't 'mean', just not the kind that would lie down when you got near so you could pick them up, like the first 2. I was readily able to identify them from the rest because of their markings. I really hate to tell them they are gone. Today one was on the outside of the fence on the other side clucking and wanting in and another was up on my deck in the yard. They have never done this and it's like they were scared and flew over the fence to get away from something. Then I counted hens and had 3 more missing. I found a breech in the bottom of the fence in one place and there were paw prints and a bunch of black feathers. I have several blacks so I don't know which one it is, and haven't gone out to figure out what the 2 others were yet. It just makes me sick that just because people live in the country they think they can let their dogs run loose. I keep my 3 small dogs inside a fence, for one reason that they do not get run over.

Ok, I think I am done venting now. Thanks for putting up with me but I had to get this off my chest. I am just soooooo mad! Those dogs come in at a culvert drainage that runs under the road and into a creek on our place and it is pretty deep. The county has big rocks in there and there isn't any way to block it off any more. The fact that they went through 2 fences to get to my babies just ticks me off. Why can't people keep their dogs at home! They also poop big piles all over my front yard and in my flower beds. YUCK! Not fun to come across when working in the beds, but that is another vent for another time!

Everyone have a great day and God Bless You.

YUP. Just found a big pile of black feathers not far from the coop. UGH!!!!!!

Question: My roo has lost all of his tail feathers except for a few small ones. I found 3 of the feathers. He isn't molting at the moment. Is it possible for him to just molt his tail feathers and no where else, or are the probably pulled out?
I'm surprised he didn't protect his hens better, but I guess if it was that big dog he couldn't????? He doesn't have any evidence of being in a fight. He's usually a good protector and won't go into the hen house at night until all of the girls have gone in, but there were a few nights I had to coax him in when he wasn't ready to go, but it was nearly dark. Maybe he knew something was awry.

Critterwoman I bet your roo got caught by his tail feathers. So sorry you are have issues with dogs. Do the dog owners know? They are financially responsible for replacing the birds killed.

all of a sudden I am starting to loose my chicks. I am down to about 3 out 9. I have them 2 separate cages. They will be fine one day and dead the next. Wondering if I might have a snake issue but they are not being eaten. These chicks are 1 -3 months old. I never have had this problem before.

Like Jcat said it sounds like Coccidosis. I have had it go thru my chicks a couple of times this past Fall. Jack had it happen too. They don't even need to be outside to get it.

Yup. Do they also know that it might be legal to shoot the dog? I would hate to have to do it but I could if I needed to.
