***OKIES in the BYC III ***

no Standard of Perfection, just meaning not ness. breeding NN that could be entered into shows (color wise or whatever wise). I like lots of variety of color and patterns and don't have the desire or ability to separate colors and keep several males, and I really like top knots. I want my NN big, w/ few feathers, lots of pretty colors and patterns if they have feathers and maybe hopefully get a few w/o feathers at all. Something recently learned about NN is they don't have body hair so no singeing hair if you pluck for processing.
I like color too so I can get behind this! Might be talking to you in the spring when I decide if I am going to go with a DP bird or what. I know I have to replace some layers this year.

Hi Robin!! Good to see you are still around too! Cute babies.

Oh, also, Gene gave me 17 Silver Grey Dorking eggs. I told him my prior loss had nothing to do with the eggs I bought from him previously and I would happily pay for them, but he insisted. I grow more and more convinced every day that any human being who genuinely cares about the welfare of a chicken must be a truly good person.

He also gave us a tour of his farm, which was really great! It's so helpful to see how other people do it, and it gave me some nifty ideas.

wow, those are so beautiful my daughter really likes cochins and we both love this color she would love to have one but i bet they are probably out of our price range.
not really - they aren't a recognized color yet and it may take years to get the breeding consistent in color. Also, they are far from the type in the black Cochins that dominate shows.

I am also breeding Lavender, (Self-Blue) Cochins and that is a much easier breeding program. Their type is coming along quickly as their genetics allow them to be bred with Blacks. Here are some of my Self-Blues. Their type is getting good but their feather quality isn't what it needs to be.
I just love Cochins - have I mentioned that lately

- they are so sweet. and funny, without little roo/big attitude drama.

Home and have the four new girls in their temporary home too! I need more day in my day. And another me. I have GOT to get this pen built, and now I need that isolation pen ASAP, as well as a brooder box. Although I was told these silkie mixes are excellent broodies... I'm wondering if I could slip some babies under them.

Oh, and apparently one of the silkies might have scaley leg mites. I doused her legs with Pam cooking spray. Is that the preferred method or is there a better way? Poor chickie, her feet look like my grandmother's did.
I mix vegetable oil with DE. put in a small cup and dip their legs in it. about every two days for a couple weeks

Kyz, Ivomec or Frontline (not Frontline Plus) will kill scaly leg mites. A Silkie sized bird would get literally 2 drops. Actually I'd probably do a drop on each thigh. It's going to distribute throughout their skin anyway but you might as well get it as close to the problem spot as possible. I would repeat it every few wks but i'm not sure how often you're actually supposed to repeat it. You got Silver Dorking eggs? Good choice. I looked all over for those last year and never found any.

MJ, your Lavenders are looking awesome!! I really like how round and puffy yours are compared to so many others I see.

Finally got my flock to bed and finished polishing my lessons for tomorrow. We had beautiful weather in Tahlequah for the chicken swap. I sent quite a few pullets to new homes today. I hope we have nice weather for the rest of the week. I have so many outside chores to catch up on, and it seems that I have more energy to work outside if it's not overcast and gloomy. I didn't have my bigger camera today. Here are a few snaps: people looking a chickens and visiting, and the other shows some adorable ducks.

Quote: a photo would be good, I am always a softy for special needs birds - cross beaks can be good layers and brooders- so i have heard- she is oblivious to her differences- i have heard both sides of the argument on whether it is genetic, i just figure in this case both hatches were under a broody so possibly she didn't cover them all during development- i just decided if there is a tendancy in the breed, not one i want to deal with- favs are pretty birds though.

Sooner- yep, we are still here, i have limitted expanding breeds other than silkies and possibly a bantam or two. I still have my layers and ducks and guineas. Keeps me busy.

Coral, looks like it was alot of fun! So is this going to be monthly then?

I am pretty proud of myself, this is the first winter in a long time that I will be going into it with just my layers & not several pens.

We are working on tearing down two of my larger pens & extending my run for my layers so I can keep them penned if needed (they like to poop on my porch). One of the pens was there very first one & is falling apart. LOL.

Hmmmmm! You should be proud! One big feeder, one big waterer, eggs to collect from one house.
That is a distant memory here since there are 7 outside pens and 13 inside pens here. That includes the separate pens for the small breeds (d'Anvers, OEGB, Rosecomb and Beau) and the floor pens.
