***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I am so glad you all are such an active bunch. I didn't get on the computer Friday and caught up last night but didn't get a chance to post. Get on today and still have to catch up. LOL
ACtually it's great. I love reading everyone's posts.
Kass, as usual I can't think of a word good enough for your pics. Have you ever thought of entering any of them in photography contests?
Also, I'm glad everyone is in my weird category. I don't feel so alone.
I just finished making my bunch of fluffy butts a couple of big pots full of rice. I don't know if cooked rice is their fav. or scrambled eggs, so they get both tonight along with some pecan and mixed with red and chili pepper.

Well, I'm probably going to have to get on the geese forum. Never been there, but I have a dilemma which I find a little disconcerting. One of my ganders, Huey (named Baby Huey, for those of you who are old enough to remember him), has decided to chose me as his mate.

Over a month ago, he started leaving the others when I came out and would come up to me. I'd pet him and he seemed happy, and would go off with the others, every day he'd spend more and more time with me, and when he heard my voice would leave the others and follow me everywhere. Well, since I had lost Little Britches, I just thought I had a new side kick. One day, after feeding, I was sitting down and he was nuzzling my leg and tried to crawl up in my lap. I picked him up and set him on my lap. He starting nibbling me again and was giving me soft little kisses. Then he acted like he wanted to get on my shoulder. I put him down and he spread his wings and tried to hump my leg like a dog. Hubby was there and I said, " Do u think what I'm thinking?" He agreed, so I pushed Huey away. He immediately took after hubby, who thought it was funny. Well, now, every time he acts like that, I push him away, and he immediately becomes disgruntled and goes after whatever is closest to me, whether, it's hubby or another animal.
Yesterday, hubby and I were winterizing one of the coops even more, and Huey was still my side kick as usual.
I sat down to rest on the garden ledge, which isn't very tall, and before I knew it, Huey, had jumped up on my lap, got on my back, and started nibbling me on the head. He had scratched me, getting up there, and had his claws dug into me. Hubby, about rolled over, laughing.

I told him that this was so NOT cool and to please get him off of me.

When he got him down, I said, please don't tell me his umm was out. He said, not yet. I sighed in relief. Well, there u have it. It's hard to even go outside late at night, to check on anything, because he starts honking for me, and I have dreams the neighbors will get my geese if they are noisy at night.

Oh, by the way, hubby did agree that it wasn't cool, and apologized for laughing so hard. He said, it was just the look on my face and Huey's. The moment.. So now, I need to let Huey know that I am not his mate without him getting hurt, emotionally or physically. (That's right, I said emotionally). Remember, not normal. I would like some input, from any of you out there that know much about geese. I hate, never being on the geese forum and starting out with this.

Oh gosh!

I've never had geese before so I'm afraid I wont be of much help with this, but good luck!

Hopefully no one comes out of the ordeal heartbroken!

Have no geese, but does he have access to a goose mate?

He is male, give him access to a hotsy totsy, w/ all the curves in the right places goose, he'll soon forget all about you! lol lol lol

Geese breed in water. He is being amorous and will become more aggressive. Is there a goose you can pen him with for a few days? If he is seeking you out, he is not the top gander in the flock. You will need to select him a mate...perhaps a goose on the lower end of the flock order that the top gander won't mind giving up.
In the mean time, carry a cane to steer him away from you. I know this sounds weird, but it works... when he misbehaves, raise your arms like wings and yell no and chase him and make a honking noise. You have to appear bigger than he is and more dominating. Use the top of your foot to lift and roll him away from you....you won't hurt him. Your husband needs to do the same. The gander will do this to children too and the habit needs to be broken. Nothing hurts worse than a goose bite.

In the field of goosanality...they pair for life....hubby put that in....

I think the Fav.s went fro 38.00 ea. for a pair and the extra roo went for 28.00 - both roos had HUGE beards- biggest beards I have ever seen on any bird.
There was a cage of very large Buff Orpingtons - all roos that created a bidding war, the first and second boys went for close to 35.00 ea. That is a lot for a solo rooster.
There was a Splash Blue Orpington roo and 2 Blue hens - beautiful! I left before they sold though. Wonder what they went for.
We wanted to stay longer but the cold was getting to our aches and pains.
I believe the trio of blue/splash orpingtons went for $35 a piece... Like I said the prices were crazy high last night.. The sad thing is there was a Java/Spalding and a Pied Indian Blue peacock for sale and the pied went for more then the Java.. $180 for the Pied and $110 for the Java.. The Java was every bit worth $250 and the Pied maybe $150... Crazy!!!

Me too! little did they know how insecure I was.
I can entertain myself all day, in fact not enough time to get it all done.
Normal is boring.
I grew up poor and different. Not sure if being poor was the reason or just part of it... I was bused in to a wealthy school, so it was really hard at school for me to fit in.. The experience did teach me to be more understanding and tolerant of others, which has helped me immensely as a teacher, in so many ways.. The good thing as an adult is I can be weird and since I have a degree and a career people people just think I am eccentric, which is fine but it really doesn't matter what most people think about me anymore..
On another note I think it is important to not allow yourself to become bitter or introverted because of how others have treated you.. I have become much more out going as an adult and most people who know me know probably be shocked to know I was quite the introvert growing up and only socialized with a few people... Now I enjoy spending time time with people getting to know people and socializing..

Check out this egg one of our hens laid today! It weighed 4.2 ounces. The two beside it weighed 2 oz. 4 oz is half a cup right? And I have big hands by the way. Size 12 foot.

Ouch!!!

Maybe you need to get him a goosey mate.. From outside your flock...

More the reason to get him a mate..

Poor goosy... they do bond for life, if it ere me, i'd make him a honeymoon pen, get him a girl, so they can bond, because obviously he is lonely and he sees you as the only alternative....

Rebecca, i'd love those cochins, but reality steps in and i have no where for them

gave the birds a gourmet dish, oatmeal, fermented feed and cayenne pepper- they inhaled it!

True story...

Bumpers the crippled chicken and I have a special relationship. Ever since I found her with what I believe was a broken hip, in shock, dehydrated, and nursed her back to health, we've been something more than just a chicken and a chicken owner. When she was learning how to walk again, I would take her outside with me, and every time I got what she felt was too far away, she would call me back, squawking at me as if I should have known better. Now that the flock is in the new pen, where they can see my front door, every time I walk outside she calls out to me, telling me to come see her. When I get inside the pen, if she wants to be at my feet she will peck whomever is in her way. Woe to the chicken that stands between a hen and her human.

Bumpers has recently started laying again, after a hiatus that started when I moved her into the new pen with her new flockmates. When I walked outside at one point yesterday, Bumpers called to me. I walked over, and she disappeared inside a large tarp holding a hay bale. I thought that was odd, but shortly after that, she came out and told me she had an egg for me! I need to move that hay.

So today I go outside and as I'm pulling my hood up, I see Bumpers jump on top of a roll of fencing and start squawking at me. That really makes me smile, but here's where it gets really odd. I went to the pen and she ran over to the hay pile and assumed the laying position. I thought this was so different, I stayed out in the pen and waited for her. She was facing away from me, but every couple of minutes she would wiggle around, then look back at me. Then, I swear, she stood up, looked under her feathered bulk at the eggless hen-shaped indention in the hay, then looked back up at me as if to say "Don't go yet; I'm working on it!" I'm almost positive this chicken WANTED me to take her egg!

At that point I picked her up, along with a bundle of the hay under her, and deposited the whole armload inside a nesting box. I sure do love that chicken!
