***OKIES in the BYC III ***

@ muesky hopefully Poco Pollo got some pics to post of the blue frizzle Cochin roo. He was 10 months old and huge. Could have saddled him up and rode him home.
Wow! $22 was not a bad price but right now I am trying to be conservative with my money since I have to get the transmission in my truck replace.. I am not sure what I would have done with the frizzle rooster but he would have looked cool in the yard..

@shelbydog wasn't that roo awesome! He was HUGE! We bid on the trio but $22 a head was a little pricey. I loved those birds and would have been happy to not have gotten anything at all but them. I knew I should have gotten them.

Well, I have a new problem with chickens. Yesterday besides adding new auction non quarantined chickens to my regular flock, I took my 3 month old lav orpingtons out and put them with the two big girls. It wasn't such a bad transition. This morning they were a little stressed from the new comers as they were at the bottom of the pecking order. That isn't really the problem. I noticed my lav orp was walking very stiffly and lays down very often. If I thought that was the worst of it I noticed the auction roo is walking crazy like he is marching. I don't know his history but my lav orp history is he was in a little make shift pen with a few other bantams until he and the two pullets got big enough. There were no roosts in this pen and he did have a heat lamp in the "hut". The coop has roosts and before I went in the house he was roosting on the side of a nesting box. This morning I noticed he had been pecked on his comb. He doesn't seem to be in pain but it's so hard to tell with chickens. I don't give him any supplement vitamins and he is eating/drinking good. I hope to God he doesn't have Mereks. I figured I would go check him over and see if there are any other noticeable symptoms. It's just crazy to see him and the new rooster walking strange. I don't think he was walking that way yesterday. Anyone ever have anything remotely close to this?

EEEKKKK- i was trimming shastas beak she jerked, cut too far and can't get the bleeding stopped, i've tried flour, new skin- what else will work? its the tip of her botom beak, she is a crossbeak

The overhead fluorescent lights in the auction barn are a photographer's nightmare. I took four photos of the frizzle Cochin roo, and this is the only one that wasn't destroyed by the lighting. Sorry it's not clearer. The auction crew were moving around a lot, trying not to freeze.

I also would get all your birds on an antibiotic, as a precaution- what is done is done, you can't change the lack of quarantine, but you can try to prevent any problems
Sure good to see you online Les!! Have missed you!
x2 I don;t know you, Les but I'm reading old posts, trying to get to know everyone. I agree, your posts are all knowlegable.

HEY EVERYONE, I AM SO SORRY I WAS SUCH A BRAZEN, OPINIONATED B-------------LAST NIGHT. IT'S TAKEN ME SO LONG TO GET TO WHERE I AM. SORRY, SORRY, SORRY. PLEASE FORGIVE ME!

TRUE 5---------Yes, when I first started out with chickens I didn't quarantine out of ignorance. I was very blessed and lucky nothing was sick. I have a big anxiety problem, and now that I know I feel better when I can look at the environment they're in and ask the owner lots of questions. It doesn't matter if the place is old and rundown
,as part of mine is, just how the birds and other animals are kept. When my ducks were dying, someone on here reminded me that most of the diseases come from wild birds. So nothing is for sure. I can't remember if it was Dr. Herrin or Sheri, maybe even something I read, but I was told one of the big reasons for quarantine, is that most diseases as well as carriers show up in a time of stress. _______ Changing homes and being put in quarantine is usually, and I say usually, puts a lot of stress on the bird and if they're sick or carriers, it will usually show up. I'm really sorry you're experience was a bad one. You have my heartfelt prayers.

I haven't researched this, but does anybody know if you can vaccinate older birds as you do chicks?. As nutty as I am, I can't believe I haven't looked into this, as all of my babies are getting vaccinated, now, for some things.

KYZMETTE--------How is your baby coming along? I hope the diaper thing has been resolved. He saidthey are going to start making them, so that will be a good thing for around here. That's another thing to be added to first aid kits.LOL YOW, he told me his opinion that he e=mailed you. Some men, and yes, some women, don't understand the maternal bond we get and the need to save them. I'm lucky, because when it comes to saving them, hubby, is usually more adament than I am, if it is humanely possible. We don't have the money for big vet bills, so if the animal can't be cured by us without going through abuse we will put them down. After being a vet tech(only horse practices), I'm
prettyconfident, most of the time, that I can tell the difference between pain and unnescessay abuse.

Thanks, I hope everyone realizes when I open my big mouth it's bexcause of love for you and your animals.

As far as I can see, it's the reason anyone on this thread give their opinion. Some just know when to and not when to, and as I said we're just like old mother hens and roosters, sometomes we just re-

act.

Alum works good for me. I haven't had a bleeding beak before, but it's worth a try. Hopfully, it's stopped bleeding on it;s own by now There's been several times that I have quicked the dogs' nails and by the time I get ready to Dr. it, it quit.

Thank you so much for that insight. So far most of the bantams are gone to the neighbor kid. It was a huge lot of roosters. Ugh! We ended up keeping one of them since it was small and I can't stand to get rid of another (yup you guessed it) Cochin. I LOVE THE FEATHER PANTS!!!! LOL! I can't get enough of it! Especially when they are scratching and their fluffy butts are in the air! HAHA!
Oh, the cochin roo was walking like he was marching because it appears that he has hurt his foot somehow. I don't know how or when or what but I'm keeping an eye on him until he goes to someone else. He is so docile. He is going to make someone a great rooster... just not me. I plan on getting some vitamins and give them all that (wouldn't hurt since the auction birds are kinda thin). Just still not sure about my lav orp roo... I have looked it up more and some say vitamin deficiency others say Mereks...

@hotcurltr : I guess I missed what your talking about... I didn't take any offence to anything you have ever said on here (whether it is to me or not I haven't really thought twice about it). I'm not sure what you are referring to to be apologizing for.

I myself have ALOT of anxiety for these animals myself and I appreciate all advice! I am new to this still so I am learning as I go.

Someone said they were laughing about the rabbit thing. Oh my, I am actually laughing myself! It's crazy when you go to an auction and what you bring back! Only my husband decided on two adorable baby bunnies... that at any other time would have told me "no" if I asked for them. Now that I don't want them because they smell SO bad I would rather not have them but the kids adore them. Heres the kicker is that I think one is male and one female. I DO NOT want baby bunnies!!!

Here's a summary of yesterday's Chicken Adventure.

Three young ladies traveled great distances to interact with poultry and poultry lovers in the great state of Oklahoma. They danced with a handsome turkey, rejoiced when they bought lovely Langshan pullets from a warm and generous couple, and expressed awe and admiration when given a tour of the pens constructed by a teen poultry prodigy, who sold the young ladies stunning white wyandotte pullets at a very reasonable price.

Dinner followed at a local Italian restaurant (Pizza Hut), and the ladies enjoyed pasta, salad, and chicken wings (with TWO dipping sauces).

The highlight of the evening was a poultry auction combined with a freezing-temperature endurance test. The young ladies complained loudly about the cold, but they endeavored to persevere and stayed at the auction until they collected the birds they had battled for and won in hand-to-hand competition with other poultry admirers. The hand-to-hand competition requires competitors to raise their hands until their pocketbooks make lifting a narrow piece of cardboard too painful.

Here's the handsome turkey who flipped and flailed his fleshy snood to attract the attention of the lovely reflective orb (camera lens).

And here are photos of the French Wheaton Marans that came home with me.

I will take you big Buff Cochin boy!
Funny when I saw that I thought you might jump in.

I had the same thought Muesky. $22 is cheap! I am still kicking myself for letting those Faverolles go at what was it $35 or $40 a piece?

Funny story! Local Italian Restaurant had me chuckle and so did this turkey. Turkeys crack me up. So dual purpose, chatty and fun, but your camera makes a brave attempt at trying to make this turkey attractive but to me they are jus the ugliest creatures in the universe. They really belong in Sci-fi, alien style movies.

Yes you can vaccinate older birds, and if there is an illness sweeping through the flock it is shown that even vaccinating at that time can reduce losses.

Yes stress is the number one factor in illness. Breed and the breeding also figure in to the mix. Line breeding for generation after generation takes the vigor and immune system right out of a flock, that is why many breeders have multiple lines of birds that they can outcross with while still keeping the desired traits.

The Naked Necks, Frizzles and Egyption Fayoumi are three breeds that are well known for their resistance to disease. In studies worldwide the NNs are often used as control subjects due to the fact that they are so stable and predictable. I have found too that the Oriental Games are very tough birds as well, but being games they often don't play well with others.

All of the older posters here know that I took a job turning wrenches for an oilfield trucking company, for about the last year and a half there just hasn't been time to read, let alone post.

If you drive in NW Ok. be careful when meeting oilfield trucks. Many companies are hiring drivers that have very little actual experience and they tend to crowd the center line. All points NW of Guthrie and from Wichita, West to the Dodge City area is where the boom is hottest right now. We have lost five mirrors on our Kenworths since we got them a year ago and at 800 dollars each that is quite a hickey!

Things have slowed down so for now I'm getting weekends off.
