***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Artificial insemination (AI) with goats is really suspect, too. A goat is easy to injure if the person doing the AI is not familiar with goat anatomy. So if you decide to go that way, make sure of the history of that breeder.

Here are the dog houses that I modified into "love shacks" for my breeding pens. I put air vents with shutters in the backs and the ramps have hinges and latches to close them. Don't look too close I am not a carpenter. The chickens like them, that is all that matters. I was rewarded with an egg the very first morning after they slept in them.

This is the big pen, I call it the Cochin Casbah.

Buck! I am so sorry!! reading your post made me go out and look seriously at my banty setup- so until i get the hardware, they are screwed shut every night- plus the dog running the property at night- he was reallllllyyyy active last night, very comforting to hear him running something ragged- talked to a friend who had a cougar attack last year, the game warden said it is legal to kill a cougar if it goes after your livestock, but you have to call them and let them know so they can get samples for dna- don't think thats what got so many of mine, but it was good to know.

MJ - I love the doghouse coops. I've been thinking about something like that for my portable grow-out pens. You have a whole village of chickens!

MJ - nice setup! I have seen/heard of dog houses used for chickens and have considered it myself. Your place looks tidy and kept up nicely. Do your chickens try to roost on top of their houses? That has been my concern with using the dog houses as the birds I have seem to want to roost higher than the roosts I have provided for them. The teenagers want the prime spots but the older girls won't share, and peck the younger ones away. Still worth a try though, I think, especially in the rain or wintertime. You've done a good job with the arrangements you made for your birds. Very nice!
