There's a chill in the air,
And there's snow everywhere,
Chicks are warm in their lair
Broodies act like a bear.
And the breeders are loving their grain on the ground
While the humans are snuggled again in their home.
( to the tune of an old hymn that memory hasn't found the name ....yet)
@NanaKat Did we have a little something special with our morning coffee...? lol
Just teasing!
LOL I was thoroughly enjoying the heating pad in my recliner....and another cup of coffee.
Welcome to Roothawg.
Mskitn , the lab in your mix is a retriever breed. Since he already knows the chickens are pack, he just needs some fine tuning. Teach him to drop his "prize" with a toy or scent bag and praise him when he does. He will learn his job with his pack if you enforce the rules as the pack leader. Growl loud commands at him when he has one of your birds...your property. If necessary nudge his shoulder with your knee. He must learn to give way to you.
We have a Catahoula /Lab who loves the chickens. He is attentive to them as chicks and helps to round them up. Red lays down at eye level and let's the chicks peck his nose. He will alert me if one is sick or distressed. He will take on anything that bothers his pack. The only dog he responds to is our Australian Shepard when she disciplines him for being too inquisitive.
As a puppy growing up his hunting /retriever background had to be channeled into new skills. It took some time and patience. His desire to please the alpha made it a lot easier.
