***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Serves him right. Anyone who truly feels unsafe getting out on the roads should not be forced to. Hope you get your truck out soon!
Me too. I am not crazy about this weather, but at the same time am thankful for precip. No harm done this time.

I guess I needed a reminder to stop and listen to the inside, we all do sometimes!

Nana, OMG-that's how people fracture hips and get head trauma. That's scary.
I've consolidated enough birds that there's just 8 water tubs I have to lug water to. The rest all have buildings with heat lamps and heated tubs. It sucks that the 8 tubs I have to haul to are spread out though. I'm so tired of this. Robin, there's more coming??? I brought my 2 Doves and 2 Pigeons inside, I was too scared of losing them to this kind of cold. They can easily take cold but not like this IMO. So there's a lot of cooing going on along with the parakeets, canaries, cockatiel and finches :) The prettiest sound in the whole world to me is the cooing Doves and Pigeons make.

MJ, "Cat" was the hen's name? lol She sounds like a real Ma Kettle :-D (dating myself again)
Aren't you under 20? For some reason I thought you were a teenager. If so, he ought to feel bad!
LOL I am MUCH closer to 30! There are quite a few teens on here though, that surprises me!

He is actually a pretty fair boss most of the time (nothing like the GH owner, I just adore him). I am just one of the ones he knows he can count on, and he prefers not to close if you can avoid it. I was a bit put out with him today though.

Ksane! I didnt know you had a cockatiel. LOVE those birds - they were my first pet (that was really mine - not just the family's).

Good day all you early birds. I stayed in bed until 10am and let hubby do all the chores. I wasn't trying to be mean, but had insomnia all night and woke up with a rare headache(meaning I don't get one very often) Poor guy, having to do it all. And then whern he finally came in freezing I drilled him about making sure he checked everything and they were all ok.

I know I can trust him so why I ask, I don't know. Maybe because I know I check a little more meticulously.

Thank you everyone, that answered my question about Kevin Bacon. I'm like Kass, I never would have figured it out.

NanaKat and TaraBella, I'm sorry u both had a rough go at it this morning. Make sure if u start feeling bad, or get into really bad pain that u go get cheked out.

I'm going to go in and out today andamke sure everthing is clean and bedded down well. Have a 5 hr. Dr. appt. in Tulsa tom., so it willl be dark when we get back home. So they won't be getting their warm feed tom. night. I worry so much that they are all going to lose weight in this cold weather. The chickens seem to be holding their own, but the geese are losing a little bit. Not that it's hurting them yet since they were so fat to begin with. They have feed 24/7. Even in this cold they have been mating , so maybe that's it. I just need to stop worrying and let things be as they will. I know I take good care of everything and that they all are well fed and sheltered.
Remember, all u english teachers, Kass said I didn't need to go back to school since I'm not a spokes person or journalist. And all of u that have been on here since I have, already know what a terrible speller I am.

ArtsyRobin--u mentioned a new forecasr. Now that is scary. I hope I can keep up with my health. My poor birds only have hubby and I and we're not always in the greatest shape, health wise. But they are my therapy.

THERE IS A POULTRY AUCTION IN OKMULGEE NEXT TUESDAY. No one has mentioned it, so i it really a dump or something?

Stay warm , happy and healthy and most of all count your blessings.

Bardies/Kim, yes and the Cockatiel is a spoiled little Diva. She was supposed to be "my" bird but all she does is hiss at me. She's in love with my husbands and fawns over him preening him constantly. I keep having to tell them to get a room lol

Kyz, my Dark Brahma girls make those garbled foreign noises! It must be a Brahma thing. The noisiest birds are my tiny OEGB girls. One of them's name is Chatter. I saw her at the flea market (Mike D had some for sale). She literally would NOT shut up when she saw me lmao! The closer I got the louder she hollered. So I bought her :)

Tara, oops, sorry haha! I have no idea why I though you were a teenager. Either way I hate bosses like that, that's the only kind I ever had.

Robin, I've got just the frostbite pair and Channing in the house. But the RV has it's share of bantams in big dog crates and the enclosed deck has been turned into a flippin' chicken coop with all the babies. I don't know what I'd do without that RV, it's been so handy. I keep it only at about 60 degrees but they seem grateful to be in there. We do what we gotta do to be able to sleep at night. I've no doubt some of these bantams and every one of the Silkie chicks would die if they were out in this cold. My Showgirl is on the deck where the 3-4 mo old chicks are. He's in a 4x2 rabbit hutch and watches those chicks all day. I keep telling him to pick out his favorites because 1/2 those girls are going to be his.

just came in from checking all of them, slick out there, guineas won't leave the porch. Travis Meyers is the weather guy on Channel 6 in tulsa, has a ranch too, so he is pretty intune to the livestock issues- been at it 18 years, so doesn't get bent out of shape with a few flakes- so if he is getting a bit uneasy, i'll pay attention

Game hens, my goodness- i have Emily, Dragon is a NN - but is a talker too, and Honey- she talks your ear off! she doesn't know she is a chicken either-

I would guess Pyrenees and Lab but that's just a guess. I miss my Pyrenees soooo bad. Their long and low sounding 'booof'. Now I just have a bunch of chicken-killing seniors that I can't trust with the birds for a split second.

I got the Kevin Bacon thing, I think it was Poco that started it a few wks back. This is bone cold, sick of it. I moved here from Iowa 32 yrs ago and I've never forgotten how cold it got up there. It's taken it all these yrs but the frigid cold finally found me. I feel so horrible for my birds! They won't come out of their buildings and coops but it's STILL 12 degrees inside of there! My Chihuahua has her sweatshirt on and she still won't come out from under her blanket lol
humm...i don't know she sure act like her GP half she is very protective of baby animals and children.

My idea about "Kevin Bacon" was close.. I know I have heard this before.. It is funny though, and I have always been a sucker for word play, it is sweet...

So no school today because it is only 3 degrees above Kevin and there is snow... Thank goodness, I woke up with a horrible headache.. Is anyone having trouble with their sinuses???
If anybody has to go out in this mess, please dress warm it is numbing cold out there.... Be warm and be safe!!
my kids had to go to school ick i hate driveing in this stuff!!

I had a little bit of a headache Tuesday night when i got up Wednesday it just keep get worse i took a Advil and that help a little but my head hurt all day long it did feel a little like a siunse headache but it was light sensitive too. I don't think it was i migraine i have never had one of those that i know of.

I'm a teen. (Mods, is that okay to say.. ? D:) and I love chickens and learning the genetics about them. I get along better with adults because most of the adults I meet are more like that than other teens.

You were one of the ones I was referring to that surprised me! In a good way! You seem to have a fair knowledge of what you are doing!

@Ksane No big deal, all women would like to be mistaken for teens right

!
I have had bad luck with bosses, until the two I have now! The Grocery store manager can make me shake my head sometimes at his logic, but he is respectful and understanding most of the time. Plus he trusts me do my own thing........as long as I don't try to explain it to him before hand

My sister had a Cockatiel when I was a kid. She had it trained to whistle different things. When I was younger, just out of High school I had a Quaker Parrot. My husband (then my boyfriend) and I went into a pet store in Tulsa. Some hole in the wall place. They had this little green Quaker parrot sitting on a perch with one bum leg that stuck to the side so he hobbled instead of walking right. I felt so bad for him because the store owner said that no one will buy him because of his disability. So I ended up buying him. He was such a good little parrot. Taught him to say a lot of things. Later on I bought a blue Quaker parrot because, yes again, I felt bad for her. She was a runt so to say. Her growth was stunted the breeder said. I loved those birds! I had to sell them a few years later because my college courses kept me from spending time with them. They needed an owner that had more time for them. I still really miss that green one. The blue one was a snot and always bit me. Such a brat.

I still feel like a teen. Then when I'm around teen I remember that I'm actually 35. Time flies by!!! So, when you figure out the genetic thing, please explain it to me.

I remember some genetics in my biology classes in high school, didn't take cell biology in college so I kinda forgot a lot of it.

well, our guineas made it through the night, i guess sleeping on the porch is enough protection?? they have a 3 sided alcove to get into-

chickens are still in coops, had oatmeal, femented feed and cayenne for breakfast, watching channel 6, Travis says next weeks storm is starting to 'worry' him and is looking like a substantial winter event.... uh oh

NO! No more cold PLEASE!!!!

@Ksane yep, and he is inferring not pretty.... talk about crowing! Sonny packs a deep crow... currently in the studio are 4 roos, Sonny and some bantams- then in the kitchen are the blind silky boys, Mr Mumbles- and the front room has SG roo... so if one kicks in the others do too

gonna make some oatmeal cookies...
HAHA! I can only imagine! I kinda a brat and will go crow to my bantam. He then crows making the neighbor kids roo crow (to my right). That in turn gets my butt head neighbor's roo crow (to my left). I can keep them going for awhile. Before the neighbor kid got rid of all his roos but the one he kept, my youngest would go outside and she would hurt herself and cry. Very loudly. Then his roos would start to crow and fight. It's crazy around here! Too bad you couldn't get them to crow a tune for you!

I added more straw to the pens. Some of the hens decided it would be warmer in a straw igloo, so they burrowed into a fluffy pile. Curious to know what was so special in that spot, a nosey cockerel dug them up. He was scolded by the hens but didn't seem to understand why.

I lost one bird to the cold: Wickett, my silkie rooster. Wickett usually roosts in the barn with a group of capons. He changed his sleeping quarters last week, choosing to roost with some young pullets in a coop that's outside the barn. He did fine for two nights, but the third night must have been too cold for him. When I let the pullets out, they flew from the coop to the wheelbarrow in front of the barn, and from there they hopped down and walked into the barn to visit and have breakfast. Wickett stayed on the roost. I called to him, but he didn't come out. He had passed away on the roost, head under one wing. If I hadn't taken him down of the roost, I wouldn't have known that I'd lost him. He was a good roo, and I'm going to miss that cantankerous little guy.
Oh no! I'm so sorry!

Question....
Have any of y'all stopped turning eggs 4 days before hatch if they are shipped eggs? Some of mine have poor air cells but most have pretty normal signs... So at least that's good. Have any of y'all tried that? Does it make a difference? And what about leaving the bad air cell eggs bottom end up for hatching as well (I have heard and seen some do this).
My experience with the only eggs I had hatched thus far (my eggs now are due to hatch TODAY but not including those in my experience belt yet) were shipped Marans eggs. A couple of them had crazy air cells that were what they called Saddle cells, or something to that effect because they looked like a saddle. They stretched on one side to the other. One air cell took up a lot of room. From what I had read about shipped air cells, you can do the method where you leave them in a egg carton like cup like someone had mentioned or you can lay the egg down with the deepest dip up. So where the lowest part of the air cell is, make sure that end is facing up. That is what I did and they didn't have a hard time hatching. It is important that you stop turning and put them in lockdown at day 18. I'm still a rookie, still learning but I have read a lot about hatching just so I can get it down right. I'm not sure what you mean by "poor air cells". Do you mean that the air cells are still as small as when you first put them in to incubate them?

Anyone going to the auction in Nowata on Saturday. Maybe I can meet some fellow members tgere .
I hope so but I just know it's going to be COLD!!! If we go it will be my self, hubby and kids.

Found on Facebook
HAHAHAHAAAA!!! PERFECT!!!

Day 21 with my 4 bantam eggs. Two still have been rockin and rollin in there. I heard a peep but still no external pip. I'm trying desperately to find things to do to take my mind off it so I'm not watching the eggs like watching paint peel off a wall!
