***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My chickies recognize the bucket of mealworms so thats what i use to get them back inside the pen after letting them out to freerange. When I walk out with that bucket they all swarm me. I accidentally dropped it today and had to get out of the way before tbey ate me along with the mealworms.

Oh I can only HOPE mine do that :) I wish you had a video of your mishap!! Lord I can only imagine the excitement LOL

They say never have a heart attack in your chicken pen- there will be nothing left of you to find!

Chicken Owners Prayer:

Lord, if I should die before I complete my chicken chores
At least let me get out of the coop and ....
With my final breath make sure the latch is well secured!
Amen

By the way, the pic's of your new babies are adorable! The girls look like they are wearing frilly hats from the 1920's

The roo is being a shy boy, but from what I could see he is gorgeous!

can any one tell me where i can find more information about the Knoxville nationals?
As in Knoxville, Tennessee? Might try asking on a Tennessee thread? I don't know anything about it myself. @Ksane here are your girls in their pen, they are still laying even through the move! The rooster kept hiding behind the ladder I couldn't get a good shot of him.
So gorgeous :-( It makes me sad to see them but they seem happy and well-adjusted, thank you for showing me they're doing good. Now I have to go ponder why it gives me a lump in my throat to see their pictures. You do know that if you decided not to breed them anymore or you need to downsize, I'll buy them back in a heartbeat, right? I have this fear of birds I've raised myself ending up in some crappy auction or in a bad situation several owners later. Just know they'll always have a home here and I'll make it worth your while :)

Haha! My husband won't step into the layers yard even to top up their water unless he has the feed bucket. He says they'd never find his body if he goes in there unarmed with food lol!

Absolutely! I promise!

I've just got the Cream Legbars. I've got a sexlink pen going, BCM over CL, but the dumb CLs in the coop keep going broody on me can't seem to get eggs out of there!

Bought a dozen Rhodebar eggs at auction in March, ended up wtih 7 boys 1 girl and a ? either unpure or wrong breed. Yeesh.
What is it with boys lately!?!? I'm keeping my fingers crossed I get more girls with what I have in the bator!

Sigh, it just happened again. I think Lord Dingwald suffered some internal injuries the other day, because he's been under the weather ever since. I thought he was just healing, but this morning I noticed his comb was looking a little dusky. I went out to get him with the intention of keeping him inside for a few days to doctor him up, but as I was carrying him in, he seized in my arms and died. Poor baby boy.
So sorry!

So I woke up to 2 dead chicks, with 1 more starting to act the way the first one did.
sad.png
Its so very sad. Is this really normal with mites? Is there anything I can do for the newest sick one? The 2 that died had mites the worse, the skin on their bottoms was completely bare, as is the newest one acting sick. No other chicks have that. This is so sad. I feel like a fool for buying chicks from someone I didn't know on Craigslist. Is this just the way it is sometimes? I'm sad and angry and burying my son and daughters cochin bantams now.
So sorry that happened to you. It's just a gamble when you buy chicks from anyone. I got some Lav Orp chicks from a lady off Craigslist and the girls I kept are in great health and one just started laying. Hope things get better with the chicks!

@Poco Thanks for the info! I don't know for sure if we will go. I think my husband is wanting me to slow down on buying anything else.

I have eggs under a broody and I have bantam cochin and silkie eggs that go into lockdown tomorrow. SWEETNESS!!

I have two other batches of eggs at two other dates to hatch. Then I am now buying some LF Cochin chicks from a lady in Inola. Like I really need anymore chicks!!! But we love our Bock Bock (aka Darling) so much that we want a couple more. She is such a hoot! I love to watch her try to jump! HA! Big girl is pretty entertaining!
I feel bad about posting that I had those hens for sale then they were going to my FIL, then I end up keeping them. It is a super long story but all I can tell you without boring anyone to tears I will just tell you that my husband promised my FIL chickens from us and I don't have the number so he started to dip into my hen numbers. Then I blew up and decided to just start over and sell. He then got angry and wanted them for his dad. I gave up and FINE! (had a tantrum). Next day they were still MINE. All I can say is my husband is driving me absolutely CRAZY with this whole thing on giving his dad chickens I don't have to give. We even got chicks and are raising them for him but for some reason that's not good enough. Ugh!
rant.gif

whatever.

So today was a beautiful day and hubby did build me a nice little outside box coop thing for the juveniles. They seem to like that they can go under it. This is their first night to sleep in it and I'm nervous because I cant close the door because they start to pant but I don't want to leave it open because "what if". They are in a run where no dog will get in it. I just fear raccoons and whatever else will climb a wire fence. (Its the wire that is like a two by four inch rectangles). Dang if I do, Dang if I don't. Anyway, Bock Bock posed for me in her own selfie. So here it is!

Nothing like a big hen wanting attention!!!

I started to read this and the first thing I was thinking before reading it all was "OMG I don't want to see a bunch of people dressed in their birthday suits like Rudy!"

@hotcurltr do a search for wryneck. Start giving her vitamins like poultry drench or poly-vi-sol without iron, and she will need extra vitamin e with selenium supplements. Increase her protein and feed her yogurt for digestive health. I suggest tbe poly-vi-sol, and for the first week give her a little straight, because wryneck is typically a nutritional deficiency, and after the first week you can just put it in her water. The most important part is the vitamin e.
Thank you. I did end up doing a seach. I don't know how they could have a vitamin deficiency w/ all I give them. They eat like little piggies besides. But I'll be happy if that is what it is. I got them when they were two weeks and in need of grocerys. I've had them 4 weeks Friday. They got poloy-vi-sol everyday for the 1st week and now I give them ACV vitamin and electrolyte mix in their water and they are still getting chick, grower feed and getting really fat. May be a problem. But thank you for answering my post. Maybe I'm over doing it. I have a tendency. By the way the first of this post had me laughing and I needed a good laugh
lau.gif
I hope things get better for you. Sometimes I wonder why I put my self through this, or why any of us do for that matter. I love them every bit as much as other pets I've had, just not the high mortality rate. I've been blessed w/ very few illnessess in my chickens. Wish I could say the same thing about predators. Floyd said hi. He's overdoing his 6 girls. May have to give him some non ee's. for a while.

So sorry for your loss :(

@hotcurltr -- I am sorry your chick is going through that! I have one doing something similar and so far I am being told to use ACV, electrolytes, vitamins (will get those tomorrow morning), and I am going to up her protein by feeding organic yogurt and dried mealy worms. I was painting in the run today and kept an eye on her for a looooong while and never did see her do it again, so knowing yours is doing it intermittently means she probably was doing it and I just didn't see it. For now, I am leaving her with the flock and will just catch her to administer what she needs. As long as she doesn't get worse like some of the photo's I've seen. Good luck with yours! I hope she recovers.

My new chicks are coming along nicely and so far the Brahma's are the first ones to come to me when I place my hand in their brooder. The Buffs are next, but those poor little PR's are completely terrified. I bought dried mealy worms tonight for the big girls and once they had a taste they went NUTS over them. Got me thinking, could I tame my new babies with mealy worms too?
Hmmmm, not knowing if they are old enough (5 days old) I threw caution to the wind and crushed a few in the palm of my hand and held it down there while softly saying, "chick, chick, chick".

It took about 4 seconds for this gorgeous creme faced Brahma to come running to my hand and snatch a worm and take off, then a Buff, then another Brahma and in about 20 seconds all hell broke loose!! Little bitty chicks running a marathon trying to A) hide with the worm or B) snatch the worm from the one attempting to hide or snatch the worm while it's running!
It was absolutely hilarious!!!!

Now I'm asking myself, just how many mealy worms can little chicks eat for my entertainment .... but instead I closed the bag and put it away :D
I sure hope your little one gets better. On the mealworm question, they can eat a lot. I had to cut mine down, as my main colony was getting depleted of older worms. I still have several hens that come to the back door everyday for goodies, so they get a few mealworms and then other treats until my colonies are back up again. It took me a while to realize they will eat until they're stuffed full of them if u let them, that is.LOL

I can so relate to both comments! I think the girls like to get right under my feet so I will drop the bucket. It is like the cows that stop in front of the feed truck while we are dropping cubes....it makes a bigger pile when we have to slow down for them to get out of the

Adams flea and tick spray can be used on chicks bottoms.

Put a piece of your wire panel over the opening. Use nails to hang it and wire or a cinder block to hold the bottom.

@muesky- Im excited to see pictures of the run when you post them! And glad to see someone else in the area. I lived in Little Axe a few years ago and really loved it. I'm really hoping within the year to sell our house and move either that way or Blanchard way.

I just woke up to 2 more dead chicks; the sick one that was getting better and the newest sick one from yesterday. So sad yet again. I barely slept last night because I was constantly checking them and feeding them. I feel like a bad chicken and human mom. My oldest son is very sensitive and this has been super hard on him. None of the other kids mind too much. Needless to say when I'm sure all the chicks are well we will be looking for more bantam cochin chicks. So if anyone in the area knows of any or has any let me know!

@ashtree you're not dealing with mites or lice if you've got dead chicks every day, it's something else. Do they have runny stools? Bloody? They can have coccidia without bloody stools for the record. That would be my #1 bet. People will tell you it's not coccidia without blood in their stools but that's dangerous inaccurate information and too many people put off treating them until it's too late because of that info. As far as DE-I've gotten too many chicks/birds in the past crawling with lice or mites who's owners have used "DE because it's natural". If natural worked there wouldn't be Seven Dust or Frontline.
I would get some Sulmet ASAP. Not Corid as it's not near as effective and doesn't kill as many strains of coccidia as Sulmet. Get actual Sulmet (which is the same stuff as Albon if you have any of that around from other pets).
That's my 2 cents that's probably only worth a penney.
