***OKIES in the BYC III ***

This is my EE and i believe she has a pea comb and... This is the egg she lays not sure what color it is i just know it is not blue i wish it was that is what i was hoping for when i bought her. So your not the only one, lol.
The one I know for sure lays brown eggs looks alot like yours. Must be her sister from another mister. LOL. I bought 6 EE hens from a guy that said they laid green eggs. I've only seen a couple green eggs.

Wise people from unwise people are created through trial and error.

Just some words of wisdom learned in the worst way...

I moved one of my redneck brooder boxes (the one with my Indian Red Jungle Fowl) from my bathroom into the back room and got sick of walking back and forth to get food, so last night I moved the crumble bag next to the brooder box. Not RIGHT next to the brooder box, but fairly close. Overnight it fell over and draped over the brooder box. Apparently the pull string, which was still attached to the bag because I only halfway open the bags, somehow managed to work its way through the wire mesh of the box and one of my chicks must have done heroic leaps to get up and catch it, so it could then be swallowed. This morning, when I saw the bag, I pulled it up off the brooder box, the lid flew off, and something small and round and brown and fluffy went flying over the side to hit the floor. When I realized what had happened, I was absolutely sick.

I ended up having to cut the string, and I'm praying that the baby will pass it and that no internal damage was done. I fully expect to go home and find a dead baby in my brooder box.

Either do away with that string, or don't keep your feed bags anywhere near your chickens. Don't keep anything with strings anywhere near your chickens.
the first year i had chickens i learned that, cut the string as close as i could to the tongue and she survived for a few years- so it passed through- strings can cause all sorts of damage, mostly wrapping feet!

Lost my sweet Traveler today, she was a black sex link and i noticed yesterday her comb was getting dark, tonite she was having problems hopping up on the roost, picked her up for a cuddle, and a few minutes later she died in my arms- she will leave a hole for a long time

Hi fellow Oklahomies! I'm in Tulsa!

I'm still very new to this chicken business and still in the research phase. I'm not really that handy (except with putting kit related things together like building furniture, etc) so I'm pretty sure I want to use this coop http://www.hayneedle.com/product/habitatshavenchickencoop.cfm unless someone can pretty please recommend something else. Would this coop work??

I'm also pretty sure I want Rhode Island Reds. I only need them for the eggs. I only want/need 2-3. Please recommend other breeds that would survive our summers and winters! I like Silkies too but they're eggs are quite a bit smaller.

Now, what do y'all do about our winters and ice storms?? I've been browsing some of the other posts and I've seen some people put shower curtains around their runs which I think is a great idea. I'm also getting concerned about tornadoes. How do I make sure my coop and run isn't gonna blow away? For summers I've seen people do little wading pools, spray down the dirt in the

I'm planning on having my coop in a 10'x22' run with some kind of peaked tarp or something on top which I'm hoping my uncle will help me build or looking into using a dog kennel possibly too. I would prefer to attempt to build a fence though because I think it would look a little nicer and the dog kennels I've looked at are really expensive. Also planning on using 1/4" hardware cloth about 12" down in the ground around the run. Foxes and hawks are going to be my main issues in my neighborhood I think. Maybe raccoons too.

I'm also thinking about having a chicken friendly "play pen" (with a cover) I can put them in during the day and then move around every once and a while. Good idea or no?

I'm planning on using DuMor 16% pellets for when my chickens are adults and the DuMor chicken starter/grower too.

PLEASE tell me this will be easier than it seems right now! :) I'm really REALLY excited to get started but doing this much planning is stressing me out a little! lol

Sorry this is a little long winded! Hoping someone can give me some advice!

I'm sorry you lost your girl.

Gee, another month gone by ... I keep thinking I'm going to start posting again every couple of days and somehow the time just slips away.

Our baby goat was born finally on the 19 April. A little boy we named Georgie. Let's see if I still remember how to post a pic. Lol - that wasn't the order I wanted to display them in but oh well ...

This was the first week of milking a meat goat. I thought I did pretty well.

Here's mama and baby a week ago today.

And here he is ... little Georgie O'Keefe. Sweet and honery all at the same time!

I've decided I want to get a milk goat though. While she's given us enough to play around with making cheese (we drink almond milk), she's not an easy milker and she really doesn't give enough to meet our needs alone. I'd like to get a Saanen that way she'd have company and I'd have a real milk goat. Anyone know anyone with one for sale?

On the bird front our new bantam hen turned out to be a frizzled cochin. She's beautiful and ugly and full of spunk ... which is good because the bantam cochin we already have is full of himself. She'll have to be brave to hold her own with him.

And I have something called a "red cap" chicken ordered. My daughter wanted them to show. Anyone ever seen them or raised them before?
You will like the milk from a milk goat better meat goats milk is very goatie (strong) tasting i have tasted both definitely prefer milk goat milk. i have two Nubian girls

they are a pain it he putty to milk but i do it any way because it taste better, my best milker right now is a boer she aborted her kids prematurely and i have a bottle baby i have to feed because his brothers will not let him nurse so i'm milking her and bottle feeding it to him. but she just follows me out to the milk stand and jumps up there no trouble at all my to milk goats have to be dragged up on to the stand and hobbled.

Robin, I'm so sorry about Traveler!

Do you feel the way that I do, that sometimes it seems like they wait until they know they're safe in your arms to let go? I know that my place in Heaven won't be a golden mansion, but green fields full of beloved dogs and chickens.

Big hugs, girl. At least you're among people who understand your pain.
