***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Anyone here know about egg color genetics? I have done some searching but having a hard time finding the answer I'm looking for. I just hatched some chicks that are from an olive Egger roo (black copper Marans x wheaten Ameraucana) out of wheaten Ameraucana hens. Will all of these chicks lay green eggs, or will some lay blue and some lay green? Assuming the roo has one blue color copy and one brown copy, hens have 2 blue copies.. Right? Way over my head, thanks in advance for any help.

You are on the right track. With Ameraucana hen mom they will definitely get one blue egg gene so blue will be in the mix. They may or may not get a blue geen from the OE roo. They will most likely get some brown egg genes from the OE roo but no telling which ones or how many. There are LOTS of different brown eggs genes, that's how Marans get such dark eggs; breeders "stack up" as many brown egg genes as they can. Each chick from that mix will probably lay a different shade of light green/ greenblue. Sounds pretty!

Thanks so much, that helps a lot! I can't keep all of them so want to be sure to pass on the correct information.

That very interesting!
I have some chicks that are Blue Copper Marans roo over Black EE. One pullet looks like a Blue Ameraucana with Copper hackles. Anouther looks like a Black Copper Marans. I can't wait to see what color eggs they lay. I need to borrow an Ameraucana roo to breed them too.

What am I saying!
I have nearly 100 chicks, of various sizes, that I am brooding right now. I blame my Sportsman! Just can't "load" it with 12 or so eggs!

I also bought chicks two weeks ago. I got 7 Corronation Sussex at Newcastle and the very next week my Corronation pullets started to lay!
