***OKIES in the BYC III ***

The last couple of days two of my silkies have been sneezing, I picked them up and listened to their chest and back and could not hear any raspy sounds, and they have no drainage from their nose or eyes or anything. What would you suggest i do, could they have a respiratory issue. I cannot loose them they are my special birds, just love them so much... They are eating and drinking fine and interacting with the rest of the flock. Any suggestions ...

If they do require treatment, what medication can i use, and where would i buy it from. Thanks

i'd almost put them on duramycin just to be safe- others might have better advise, is it real dry in their pen?? maybe dust?

will muscovy ducks kill non muscovy chicks? i had put a couple normal duck eggs under her since i knew her eggs wouldn't hatch, found them almost at hatch, one in the pool and one next to her nest- no marks on them, just like they came up to hatch, no shells to be found, just weird

Robin, Muscovy ducks will usually hatch anything even chickens. Mine have hatched chicks. I've never known them to kill young of any poultry species.. Now a drake will, sometimes. I'm having a hard time with Humphrey because he trys to kil lthe ducklings to get to mama to breed. I've had other drakes do the same thing. Donald, the one I lost to Pm, was a great daddy. almost like a gander, helping babysit and very protective of the eggs and his girls.. He was just like all the rest though. He did want to mate the mamas, if they all had set at once. But he would just walk through and scatter the babies. So I don't know what is normal.. I've been meaning to get on the duck forum to find out, because I've had more drakes that go after the ducklings than not. Hubby has raised muscovys for years and said he's never had a problem w/ mamas, they've always been good with whatever they hatched. I did take my chicks after a few days from mama duck because I was afraid she'd try to teach them to swim. They were really upset when I took them away. It does sound strange. I take it, you're saying the ducklings did hatch. I have had one drown before because it couldn't get out and obviously got tired.
I keep a board in the pools the ducklings can get to. Do they have access to the other ducks? Maybe they tried to steal them. Other breeds of drakes will breed them, but they will be mule ducks.

PS My girls do eat the shells unless there are a lot. It's supposed to be because of predators finding them.

i feel so sad for those babies, someone told me that muscovy's will do that when the babies start pipping, but once they have hatched they are fine with them, its the hatching process that stresses them- i don't know, just feel sorry for them.

@shelbydog how are Leah and the gang doing?
