can anyone tell what breeds this one has in it? I bought it a couple weeks ago, it's suppose to be about 4 months old now but is much larger than the same age americanas I bought with it. I'm guessing by the top tuff it's got some polish in it, and the tail feathers are a sort of green color. Any guesses?

Pure guess, but I'd say an EE, polish mixed w/ EE or Amerucana

2 bananas, 4 eggs, handful of oats, sprinkle of baking powder and cinnamon, and the best pancakes you've ever put in your mouth. And even better if you have some orange spun honey to top them with.

@hotcurltr what is "the gene" you are asking about???
You already answered it for me. The fm gene, is what I think you called it. Mmmmmmm those pancakes sound deliciious
Sorry I haven't been posting much. I feel so out of touch until I catch up behind on those two weeks. I am keeping up now so I want to say hi and welcome to all the newbies.
I really want to go to POOPS, I just never know from day to day, but will register when I come back in. I have things and chickens I want to donate to the raffle. If I can't make it maybe I can bring it to Kass to take. I have several cockerals that are crowing and trying to breed everything. I Can't kill them, although I could dress them out, so will be taking them to auction soon. I just don't have enough pens to keep them all in. Some are really big. There is one guy I might end up paying someone to caponize for me, because he's such a sweetie and so affectionate, but if I start to do that, then I will have to build more and right now, it would be too hard by myself. Talking about broodie hens, I have a black sexlink that is on eggs! I didn't think they were ever broodie. RIR over Barred Rock, so maybe the barred rock maternal instint took over. And my white toppie game hen stole the nest my Austrolorpe was on. Then were Floyd's eggs out of all blue egg layers. They keep fighting so I really don't know what to do at this point. If I move them and put Olivia ( she's the aus)in a cage w/ them will she take them back? I hate losing them all, but the game is small, part bantie and LF so I don't think she can hatch out 10 eggs.
Anyway, it's late and I need to take the chickens the boiled eggs I made for them. They have been wasting and very picky lately, so I let them eat what they want first and then give them goodies.

I see that us Okies love our chickens I was just wondering how important it is to raise purebred chickens.

If your purpose is to preserve an endangered breed, it's very important. If you want to breed to sell valuable rare breeds, it's very important. If you want to raise chickens as pets, or as egg producers, it has no importance whatsoever.

I think we all go through the phase where we see something new and we want it. You'll figure it out, but you don't have to do it immediately. Think of it as taking your flock for a test drive. :D

I agree with Kyz. I have a mixed flock for eggs to satisfy my liking for diversity. Then I have purebred Columbian Wyandotte, purebred Buckeye and purebred Cochins as well as Bantam breeds of Delaware, Spangled OEGB, Rosecomb and D'Anvers. I also have project pens for Blue Columbian Wyandotte, Blue Birchen and Black Birchen Wyandotte. A lot depends on what space you have and what your budget can afford.

Diana, if they are still fighting over the nest, then yes I'd separate them and give Olivia Australorp the majority of the eggs. Have her cage all made up with food water nest material and the eggs right in the nest. Then gently add her to the cage. She should settle down nicely when she sees those desired eggs she wants to hatch. The game could probably handle two or three if you want to let her. Otherwise Olivia should be able to cover them all.
I gave an OEGB hen six bantam eggs to hatch and then gave her more chicks. She is biddy raising 15 Bantam chicks and doing a great job. She looked really determined trying to cover all those babies under her wings in the cage for that first week. Now she is on the floor with her brood and beginning to take them outside.

Maddie again! Pics from today. Comb and wattles getting pretty red :( if she turns out to be a he, is there anyone here that might be interested? Maddie is super sweet and comes running when I go into the yard. Still not sure on the whole frizzle/sizzle stuff. There are smooth feathers, frizzled feathers and silkie fluff haha
Going to put on the breed/gender forum :)

if it is a break, can you feel movement in the bone?? if she isn't in pain, i'd almost wrap it with vetwrap to give her a little more support on it

since she has such a sweet personality, i 'd keep her, pair her with the gentlest roo, you'll know her eggs from the others, so wouldn't need to hatch necessarily-
I felt it, does not seem to be any movement (like in a rolling feel) - I did not try to bend it. Bird did not flinch or pull away, but honestly, I do not know if it hurt the bird or not. It felt like a swollen knot and there was heat to it. I went ahead and wrapped it.
I can keep the bird in a kennel for a few more days.
