Polly just died in hubby's arms while I was researching. I have no Idea. I feel guilty because I didn't pay attention at feeding time tonight, but she was fine yesterday. Just during the time we had her in the house, her comb and wattles went from a nice red to purple. It had to be some sort of toxin. Right. If she would of had a broken egg inside, or been egg bound, which I couldn't feel an egg, she wouldn't go downhill so fast would she? And her crop is full from eating, but not impacted, as it's not hard and she had no foul odor coming from her mouth. Just couldn't get up and the yellow poop. No respitory issues. I don't feel like doing a necropsy tonight , so I'll put her in a bag in the outside fridge. and do one tomorrow. I hate them dying at all, but on a weekend is bad because they can't be sent off. My poor, poor Polly. She was the last of my first.

I have a mixed pullet from her and possibly another one. I can't tell yet, if it's a he or she, but pretty sure it's a roo. I just didn't want to think so. I usually don't feel this sick, but as I said she was a favorite and one of the first. She's in chicken heaven now.

I'm so sorry :-( No, that doesn't sound egg bound. When they're comb turns dark like that sometimes it can mean some sort of lack of oxygen, like in heart problems.
I just lost my last Silkie boy from the 1st batch of chicks I ever raised. I know the feeling. I have 2 hens out of him but that's all.

Let's see where we could meet, ok? Shawnee is a little over an hour from me (I'm just south of Guthrie). How far is it for you? They can be any age to caponize, up to 3-4 months is relatively easy to do although my success rate is only about 75% living through surgery. I'm trying to perfect the method Poco uses with the thread, which would enable me to do older roosters, that's why I want some to practice on. If an artery is accidentally nicked they do pass very quickly, most in seconds. How old are the boys?
I bet your hen is egg bound. I spent 45 min the other night with a hen in the kitchen sink in nice super warm water relaxing her. Most of the time they pass the egg in the water. This hen didn't after that long so I put her in a crate in the living room. By morning she'd passed a huge soft shelled egg. She couldn't even stand when I brought her in, I thought she was going to die. The next morning after she'd passed the egg I put her back with her group and she was running and dust bathing. When they're egg bound they act real weak, won't walk or stand, just keep squatting usually. Get her into some real warm water up to her neck. Hold her head up, they get so relaxed they'll slip down into the water otherwise. Just talk to and keep running more warm water.
I don't think Shawnee is quite an hour. I used to live in Guthrie on RR2 off of Waterloo rd. I can probably meet you a little closer to OKC. I could kiss you and Kass.
I wish I had read your post, while I was researching. I should of put her in water. I'm really ignorant when it comes to chickens. I've just been really, really lucky until this year of never having any sick or anything unusual, except her mother. I don't consider the pred attack unusual at the time. I hope I find the problem when I do the necropsy tomorrow. I like closure. But don't we all.?

@Ksane Sorry, they are from a few weeks to 8 months, although I do have an older rooster, I'm trying to rehome. A Heritage RIR. Have too many of his daughters and he's getting to be a big jerk. to the hens. I don't know if it's because of all the young roos or what. I'm going to let Kass take all she wants first, but I have plenty. At least now I won't have to worry about someone torturing them. I get so weird. I's rather euthanize than have them tortured. And I know you don't eat them, but my plan was to become self sufficient and someday, I'll be ready and will. Right now, I just want to do the NN thing w/ many different breeds. I really think that would be neat. And I'll still have egg layers and birds for processing, if I ever get that far..The dogs would probably like it too.

Sudden onset of all or partial paralysis w/o trauma my guess would be botulism

I'd rather not take any under 3-4 months. Mainly because I don't want to raise any more chicks. I haven't been able to even kill any on purpose yet, much less eat them. I'll take the RIR to practice on if no one else wants him. Kass-take as many as you're able to-please. I do NOT want to hear the words, "Oh, he's cute! I'll save him for Mitzi!" Because we all know what happens to the cute boys here-they end up on my lap with me singing Puff The Magic Dragon to them

Did anybody go to the sale in Checotah last night? I was exhausted after a week with students, and I didn't want to start my weekend burdened with a sleep deficit because my grand babies were due to arrive at six this morning.

We've been working on miniature artwork in my classroom for a week. Paintings were photographed, reduced, printed, and mounted in bottle caps to make pendants. Here are a few examples. The paintings were done with tempera paint. Each bottle cap image will be covered with a clear plastic resin to protect it. The resin makes the image look more three dimensional.

:lau :gig Im not sure who enjoyed that more, Arlo or me!!!

@hotcurltr Im so sorry you lost a favorite girl :( I hope it was just an old age thing. And I hope you DILs health has improved and keeps improving. Please keep us updated!

@Poco Pollo Those are awesome! I love that. I think it's something my kids would love to do as a homeschool art project, then we could make stuff with them! Thanks for sharing. :) I'm really into micro knitting tho I've not gotten much done since my baby was born. I'm working on fitting out the kids dollhouse, which I seem to enjoy more than them :)

Ok this is it, the weekend we will get this coop finished! Please oh please oh please!!!!
