***OKIES in the BYC III ***

:) Thanks, I love my silkies and sizzles so much. Im kind of picky! Im having trouble posting, but I will say that orange pullet is queen bee around here! She is incredibly spoiled. If Arlo even thinks she's panting he brings her inside and puts a fan on her. No other bird gets that kind of star treatment. Unfortunately I'm not getting fertile eggs from her yet, at least I wasn't with the last batch. I have some of her eggs saved up to try when I get my next batch in. I think Im going to go ahead and order catdance eggs! I was planning to get SFH from cathiesue but her birds aren't laying enough, so Ill wait until spring. And I think you're right about showing sizzles since they aren't a recognized breed (YET) Good luck with your longhorn. Are they Texas longhorns? Do you raise any dairy cattle? I can't remember who asked about the Silkie nationals but its December 13th, I am so going to be there!!!! :)

They are Texas longhorns. I don't know if I can put a link in here, but put a www in front and a dot com in the back of CommandersPlaceLonghorns and you will find our herd. No dairy cattle ((way more work)) but I will admit that I've milked a longhorn before. Shawnee was mentioned as the big show to go to, just confirming that is where they are holding the Silkie Nationals? If so, then 13 Dec is the date! Last year a bunch of us met up and went to this awesome Mexican place for lunch. The shrimp thing I got was to die for!

Just returned from 2 1/2 weeks in Texas helping my youngest brother who was badly hurt in a fall and had surgery.

I've not even tried to read up on what I've missed, but will do so soon.

What does SFH stand for? @ashtree

Swedish flower hens, my other favorite breed of chickens ;)

Glad you're back. How is your brother doing?

14 chicks, 1 more pip. :)

I thought I replied to this.....love those longhorns. Wow. They look much larger than the ones at the Wichita mnts. I'm really thinking about getting a dairy cow next spring. We only have goat experience tho. So not sure. And I will be at silkie nationals for sure this year! Arlo and I are excited :)

NanaKat,
I am sorry for your losses.  I lost a great deal of birds this spring to raccoons, coyotes, etc..., one night, having had my fill of their debaucheries, I loaded my Henry .22 and a Rossi .410 shotgun and took out a walking through my creek bottom behind the house; wasn't too long before I located shinning eyes in the trees and within a few nights 9 coons and 2 coyotes were no more and the killing stopped.  Traps will work with minimal effectiveness, I recommend that if you know some fellows in your area that have a liking of coon hunting, offer them hunting rights to your property and let them eliminate your problem for you.
I am considering bringing some birds to sell at the Newcastle sale the first weekend in October, if you want I can bring you some replacement birds at that time.
Blessings,
Bo

Bo, I will PM you and am thrilled with your offer to bring replacements. We have a fellow BYCer who hunts coyotes for us. Will check with some local coon hunters.

Betsy, so glad to hear you are back at home and that means your brother must be much improved.

The vet told me to get some Oxytetracycline and put it in her water.  Will that work?

What type of Vetericyn?  Hydrogel or liquid?

My hubby came home with some Triple Antibiotic Ointment with a painkiller that is NOT a cain derivative.  It is Pramoxine HCL.  I found this on PoultryPedia.com is this correct?  I just ran out of my other and it is time to get some more on the little one...

This is from the site...
Never give a chicken any kind of painkiller with 'caine' in the name. These are EXTREMELY toxic to chickens if overdosed.
  • Exception: Procaine Penicillin injectible is not as risky because it is rarely overdosed.
  • Do NOT use a Triple Antibiotic Ointment with "Pain Relief" or Painkiller because almost all include '-caine' ingredients.
    • Exception: Neosporin with Painkiller products usually only use Pramoxine HCl as the painkiller ingredient, and that is alright for chickens

still looking for Sulmet, by the way...

Well I'm not a vet, so you could try the oxytet. The ointment sounds like generic neosporin.
