Which sale were you mentioning Michael? We get the Oklahoma Market Report from ODAFF each week in an email. This week the Oklahoma Stock yards had 13,680+ head run thru their auction. Prices were still good. This is less than their high of 17,000 during the 2006 drought. The report doesn't include Elk City or Clinton...so was interested in that information.
We are holding on to our cattle for now...still have grass in Paden on a 160 acre lease. Got rain in Prague on the 80 acre lease but not on the 160 north of Prague. We received only a light shower here in Meeker on 248 acres. We got rain on the 40 in Choctaw, but maybe not enough. The creeks are dry, but we still have pond water. The bermuda has gone dormant and those who are baling around us are getting less than half the numbers of bales they got last year. They are raking and baling right behind the cutters because the grass is so dry...what little green grass is in the cut is providing the moisture needed in the bale. One of our neighbors is already feeding baled hay to his herd.

News reports on turkey/chicken growers in NC, Virg, Ark and Missouri are reporting record numbers of turkey and poultry deaths due to heat...in the thousands of birds. 4300 turkeys (50 pounders) on one farm. Bet the prices for our Thanksgiving birds will be high this year.

And the prices on hay and feed will be higher as crops for feed yield less.

On the bright side...we have our health. Hubby saw one of his doctors today who told him his test results are great and the surgeries he has had have increased his air chamber/capacity. We see the other specialist next week and there is a 99.9% chance they will permanently remove his trachea tube. His breathing stopages following the first surgery were 97 per hour and after the second surgery his stoppage average was 9.6 per hour. He can now sleep without his oxygen and without his nebulizer and keeps the trach plugged...so he is breathing thru his nose and mouth during sleep. It's been a three year ordeal that may soon be over. We have had lots of people praying for him...prayers getting answers.

Lynn! Glad you found us and posted - we are all pretty dry and crispy this summer! I added you to our Okie Roll Call - links in my signature. Got chickens?

Michael! It looks like your ducks are swimming in gasoline! Ha - just kidding - thanks for the great photo - I think I cooled down a couple degrees looking at it.

I bought a little blue pool like that to put a few inches of water in for the chickens, but they won't get in it.

Put some playground sand in it and then wet it down. Then they can dust bathe in a nice cool place.
