***OKIES in the BYC III ***

The automatic turner on my Brinsea Mini incubator stopped turning. I'm thinking it locked up or burnt out. I am hand turning my eggs right now. Has this happened to anyone else? I have only had this incubator a year

I would call brinsea. They have excellent customer service and I've had nothing but great experience with them

I'm fairly certain that in this group, y'all have seen just about most every situation, associated with chicken health. So, before running over to the chicken health forums, to ask, I'll ask the folks I know and trust, first.
I have 6 Cuckoo Marans hens and one rooster. All act quite healthy, and the eggs seem to be adequately fertilized. One hen, though, I recently noticed, has a foot issue, and it's not bumblefoot. She is missing all of ner nails but one, and each toe, is short, fat and stubby. Plus, her beak, shanks and toes, are much yellower, than everybody else. This tells me that she's probably not laying. But, overall, could it be indicative of health issues?

Her feet got frostbitten at some point. They look well healed at this point, no reason to be concerned.

Do you remember which color eggs hatched what?

Kass...great info on the wine making equipment.  My SIL makes good  wine too...but he has all those gadgets.  Yours sounds wonderful.

Kyzmette,  Have any of your iris begun blooming yet?  My white and yellow ones are blooming now. 

Has anyone heard from Shelbydog lately?

It has been raining here the past few days... 3/4 of an inch, but the ground was already pretty saturated.  The chickens are calling for an ark!
Because it was so wet, I decided to go ahead an work up hominy to can.  Started this morning and after going thru all the boiling and cleaning steps now the two canners are humming with shut down at 4:30pm. Since I was already in the kitchen, roasted a variety of veggies for lunch. mmmmm good.

X2 Kass, I'm going to start looking for those containers. I'd like clarification on what you're doing with the balloon though, please?

Nana, odd that I should see this rigjt after I got off the phone with Dusti. She's doing great, but she went and got herself a maaaaan, and there went all her quality time! She promised to have coffee with me this week though, so I can't complain too much.

I don't have any flowers on my irises yet, but I'm getting a strong growth of blades all over the place! The Jerusalem artichoke didn't seem to make it, though. I don't remember all the other great goodies you sent me, because I went on a planting spree, but I was really looking forward to that coming in.

I love hominy. It's like eating a tortilla chip that's good for you!

I think my new yellow baby from Atwoods looks very similar to your yellow one.. Now about 3 weeks old, she (thinking positive) is also starting to get brown feathers on her chest. Any idea what it is? This picture is a week old.

I was thinking the same thing Rinda said. Frostbite took the toe tips but they are healed nicely.

Well, tell Dusti we miss her! And we need to know more about this maaaaaan too! He has to pass our inspection!

We love homemade hominy so it makes the effort worth it. 12 cups of dry corn (food grade) made 19 pints. I still have 20 pounds of dry corn to work up.

My Jerusalem artichoke aren't up yet. They like really warm soil...don't give up yet.

When you put the yeast in to ferment you need a one way air valve, so the air bubbles can escape but air can't come back in. They make airlocks special for it, the ones I bought had a little thing that looks like a Japanese hat in the mechanism those suck don't waste your money. There are some that look like an "s" curve those are better, but I haven't found any. So I am using a balloon, just put it over the small opening (put a couple pin holes in it first) then while it is fermenting the balloon will be inflated, when it goes completely flat fermenting is finished and racking can start.

Thanks Rinda and Nana! I appreciate it. I hadn't thought of frostbite. I was worried about the unknown. And, of course, I got my answer, right here.

Kass, I haven't made wine before, but the process is similar to making beer, just using different ingredients. I might have to try making wine, one day. Apricot or peach, sounds really, REALLY good, right about now. But, I like that container, for fermenting and racking, all in one. Do you filter, when you rack, or do you leave the sediment? A friend of mine loves when I leave the yeast sediment in my beer. But, it's been so long, and I gave away all of my carboys, hydrometers, everything, to a friend before leaving California.
I also have a few gallons of legal Apple Pie Moonshine left from last year, if anyone would like to try it. Just let me know, if I'm ever headed somewhere you are going to be, I'll bring some along.
I like the taste enough, but I'm just not fond of the "sweet" apple taste. So I just don't really drink it. I much prefer a tart, Granny Smith apple flavor, over the taste of sweet apples, and this "Moonshine" (made with all legally taxed liquor). Friends and family much prefer this Apple Pie, over others they've tried, and it comes out of the bottle at about 70 proof.
I really need to make another batch of beer soon. I might have to get that container like yours, Kass, and make a small batch. I have the bottles. I just need the caps and capper.

Does anyone know if it's possible to caponize a drake? I will have 1 with several chicken hens and just realized that might really be a problem. He's a few days old now but I'm wondering if anyone on BYC has experience and would mind helping? I will gladly pay if it means we get to keep little Tump Tump.
