***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Prior to this year, I had my trusty barred rock hen that was a wonderful broody. Sadly she passed early this spring. I was curious if I would have any replacements, but slightly thankful because I am out on space from adding dorkings.
My two barnevelder hens have stubbornly decided to brood for the past two months. More stubbornly than my barred rock ever did. These sneaky hens even cached a nest of eggs in the corner under the rear open nesting boxes. Surprise for me today when I hear 3 chicks cheeping. Also surprising for me, was to find these birds sharing a nest and sharing chicks. I have never dealt with multiple Broodys. My EE is also joining the nest and letting the chicks climb on her. I normally kept my broody separate in a hoop coop ( I call it my hatch shack) but currently it is the home of my dorking project. I'm assuming 3 of my top hens involved with these chicks should keep them safe. I'm leaning towards not interfering and letting the chickens handle it. Thoughts?

They should be just fine. I have three hens sharing 7 chicks right now in a flock pen. You might need to make a chick shack that has their feeder where they can get to their chick feed without the big birds getting to the feed.

I am going to have a garage sale at the end of the month and was wondering if it would be weird to have a cage or two of chickens for sale?

Why not.

Little Minnie was stronger yesterday morning taking a good bottle. But by late afternoon, she developed a high fever. We gave her oral antibiotics and had to use a syringe to feed her two cups of milk. Mary has stayed with her. We set her up a feeder and water just outside the stall and she has been fine.
Will go out now to check on Minnie and let the chickens out to range. We will try a bottle but are prepared to syringe again.....keep good thoughts for today.

I have 30 chicks in the brooder box that I plan on giving to some broody hens this evening, we made hot sauce from tomatoes yesterday too.

Update on the three hens...the EE decided to steal some eggs to sit on. I decided to go back to check on the chickens for some odd reason. I'm glad I did. I found a newly hatched and very cold chick abandoned, and the EE piled back in with the others. I honestly thought the chick was dead. But when I touched it it cheeped! I snatched it and tucked it under one of the barnevelders. I am happy to report it is fluffy and active this morning. I have some cockerels to dispatch today. Then I will be moving the Dorkings in with the main flock and the chicks will go to the hoop coop. I must say. Too much unplanned chicken drama! Lol

Margaret,
I SO wish that I were closer to you, and already had a coop built. I could use 30 or more guineas. I set 50 or more eggs in the 'bators, this year, and not a single egg hatched. I have 20+ acres, that are just tick infested, and could use a hundred guineas, if'n I could get some older ones. I have 30 coming from McMurray, at the end of the month, but, by the time they are ready to forage for food, winter will be nearly here. The 3, 1year old Pearl guineas I have, just can't get the job done, on this property. One went broody on me for 2 months, and disappeared into the woods, but never brought back any babies.
Next season, I plan to have a big Brinsea incubator, and hope to have better luck, with setting eggs. But, that doesn't help, now.
