***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Your experience with heat loss and the subsequent stronger survivors bears out what several of my old-time chicken friends have told me--that is NOT to coddle your flock, but let them handle temperature variations without excessive help, only what is reasonable. Sounds like you have a lot of experience and know-how with chickens!

Will my Showgirl Silkies be ok outside this winter? They have a small coop in a pen that has a visqueen (sp?) wind break and a covered roof.

Hi all,
Just finished catching up on more than a month of posts. I am glad to hear that Tucker is doing better! One of the reasons that I haven't been on much is that I have been caring for our oldest cat. About 3 months ago he had trouble breathing and our Vet was very busy so we took him into the city and 3,000.00 and a missed diagnosis later we were back at Deer Creek, our wonderful, local vet., and found that Nigel, the cat, had a heart defect that was allowing his chest to fill with fluid.
Dr. Link, John, now has his son working with him and Bret, the son, found a heart medicine developed for dogs that has been used incidentally on cats. That med and a Lasics drug kept Nigel going for these 3 months but finally the drugs also accelerated the renal failure that elderly cats often suffer.
Nigel was my Husband's cat and was much adored by us both. Joe has also had his father on his mind. His father, living in Mississippi, is 74 and has Dementia. My father, in Michigan, is 92 and we have moved him to an assisted living facility. Dad is very unhappy there and my mom, age 86, is torn. Even though I have lived away from family for so many years it still is hard and I think our animals are extra companionship to both my husband and me.
Last week Joe drove to Mississippi to spend time with his dad and Dad recognized him. While he was gone Nigel went down hill fast and I took him to the vet for the last time. We had 13 years with him.

Oh my MJ

my heart goes out to both you and your husband.

So sorry for the loss of your beautiful cat and for the pain and suffering of your other family members. This is a sad time of life in many ways, but also good in others.
