***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Closing them up in a solid coop with a LGD roaming should do the trick. Make sure the coop has all the little holes not just at the ground covered. In case of coons, possums, skunks, or bobcats if you have bobcats around. And remember to shut the door. I lost 30 in a night last year (everything in that coop) leavening the door open while I was gone for a few days. I'm thinking about an auto door when I build a new coop.

Thanks! We have chicks coming next week and we're working on a coop/henhouse. I'm wanting a mobile one so we can allow them to free range in different spots every few days. I do have electrified netting fencing that is effective against predators, but there are a lot of hawks out here. Not sure how to fight them off or keep them away from my chickens!

I have heard wind chimes those little spinny things and pie pans help. I haven't had any luck with them so I built a special trap. But you can build little huts so to speak for them to run under when they see a hawk. It could be an old pickup bed topper or as simple as a piece of plywood on blocks. If the rooster is watching and sounds the alarm they can run to safety without running all the way to the coop.

oh, that's a good idea!

Remember this earlier this week?

We had Doc Kendi Horner out Monday to help with a cow that was down in our back pasture unable to get up. After an IV of calcium, a couple of shots and then a gel pack on Tuesday, this big momma was standing up Wednesday.
The boys moved the trailer down to the pasture to the temporary pen around her. When they backed it up to an opening in the pen Patches stepped into the trailer without any prodding. They moved Patches to the lot in front of the barn where we could keep an eye on her..

Well Friday
, Patches had her calf. The Lucky baby has been bucking and running most of her first few hours. Thank you Doc Kendi Horner from Prague Veterinary Clinic.

Notice the chickens photobombing the background. They learned quickly to keep their distance from the baby...Patches snorted and charged them. The calf is very healthy...maybe the calcium helped her too.

Looks good and healthy NanaKat. She otta be a good cow to deliver a healthy baby early with out pulling or a C-section after being down like that.

Hello everyone! My name's Hannah.

Glad to see a large Okie thread. I live close to Poteau, OK and share a home with 5 hens (and a chihuahua). I've only recently got into chickens, but it's the best decision I've ever made.

enjoyed the pictures of your birds.

Calving season is much easier when your not out there all night trying to pull one b4 the coyotes get both.
Yes, it is. We lost two this past month to coyotes in the west pastures so moved that herd closer to the house. No losses since. Patches was in that Spring herd too.

What kind of puppies are your babies?
Gracie is now 12 and her inoperable lump has grown enormous and is beginning to affect her breathing. Red is 8 and facing surgery for his hip if OSU vets will approve it.
