***OKIES in the BYC III ***

We are east of Highway 18 on Highway 62. We are getting heavy rains and strong winds but we are safe. One dog is hiding under the desk between Roger's feet and the other is in the recliner with me.
you know Kats a tru okie. She's kicked back in the recliner while the weather guessers get excited about "rain wrapped" and "get to your shelter".

All good here. I was in my recliner enjoying a root beer watching the news guy go nuts.

I'd like to mention some of the thing we do for emergencies that fit our situation. Nana has an outstanding list and in this state there's no such thing as too prepared.

In general, if a power outage is probable, we keep all the cans and vehicles filled with gas. We fill the bathtubs with water (for washing and flushing toilets) and plastic barrels of water for live stock. We keep a lot of canned goods and bottled water in the house and because the entire clan usually gathers here they bring more. Batteries are important because as Nana said, the generator doesn't power everything. And toilet paper!

For winter, (I grew up in South Dakota a long time ago) we have a wood fire place and a propane cook stove. A propane grill is something most people have.

Tornado and fire season, bug out bags and tubs of important stuff are by the back door. Nana mentioned something I didn't think of and that's assigning tasks. I back up the computer to a portable hard drive and keep it in a safe deposit box in town along with irreplaceable things. Since the only road to our house includes a dam, we keep a vehicle on the other side in case it washes out because it does overflow. Keep the shelter stocked with water and a little food or snacks. I keep a camping tent and a little portable grill in the shelter too.

I know I've mentioned things that most of you already do, but I was in the military for a long, long time, and went through just about anything you can imagine. And I tend to ramble!
Having said all that this is a wonderful place to live and family, good friends and neighbors make it what it is!

So I have a question: The hen in the previous post hatched out this one chick on Saturday. They seem to be doing fine. I have a bunch set to hatch on Tuesday. Can I give her more babies 10 days later? How many more could she handle? Should I buy one at Atwoods tomorrow to make sure she will accept other babies? Thanks

You can try, but keep an eye on her. Some hens will take more babies, some won't. She will have to be penned in close quarters for the new chicks to bond to her "talk". They need to learn what the older chick has already mastered.

She is in a large dog crate now. What do you think about the "transition chick" idea? Should I get one to bridge the time between now and Tuesday and get her used to the idea of "chicks vs. chick?
