***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Javis-- I do understand not turning the incubator off-- but sometimes you must take a break! I was just getting ready to lay off the hatching, since my guineas are done laying. However, stupid hawks have decided I need to have some replacement birds. I am going to set a few days worth of chicken eggs, they will be barnyard mix. I had them all separated until the heat went crazy. Our barn lean-to seemed cooler than any of the other coops, so I let them all sleep in there. They have loved the cool barn dirt & the nice shade.

I was trying to count birds again last night, think I was around 55-60. Before this I had 75+. I do need a rir rooster, would like somethig not related to any of mine, wander if Michael has one? If you run across one lmk Michael. I know a guy out in the mountains that has one, but don't want to drive an hour for a hatchery rooster.

Soon as it cools off I will separate my rir & wellsummers again, but for now I am really enjoying have them in one place, makes chicken chores much faster! I only lost 1 rir (out of 40+) to the heat (he got out the cage & couldn't get back in) but I lost at least 5 welsummers (out of 20) to the heat (they died in their coops, even though I wet the coops& they had cold water & ice). None of my barnyard mix died in the heat. Anyone else have a breed that did better in the heat than the others?

We need to introduce to "Chicken Math" once you have the hang of that you will soon realize you need more, it's not a want or like to have thing it is a need.

She may have to move if you introduce chicken math to her!

They had a recent chicken crack down in Lawton. Everyone began getting letters in the mail that they needed permits & inspections. A few friends of mine said they know the neighbors turned them in, but others thought the neighbors loved the chickens. In Lawton the rule is 12. You pay for the permit, they look @ your housing & it is all good. How many can you have in Tulsa? I am sure it has to be more than 6! When we lived in town, I just made sure to rehome the noisy ones so the neighbors didn't get mad.

Um... we are NOT moving, because we JUST moved into this house. And I live in East Tulsa.

I am finding out I probably will NEED more chickens, but I need to be sure I can house the ones I have first.

And then MAYBE I can convince my hubby into letting me get a few more "friends"....

My hubby is so sweet. He really had no idea what HE got into when he let me get 1 chicken.

Angela,
Welcome to the forum, You will get a warm welcome from everyone and soon The Chairman of the comitee I am appointed to will be along with the standard dislclosure.
What do you have, or what can we help you find? Are New birds or just the forum?

Thank you. I am new to both Chickens and the forum. I've had my chickens about 1 1/2 months. I hope they start laying any day.

Surprisingly my Australorps did wonderfully in the heat....you would think their black feathers would make them more susceptible to the hot days.

Lost a black sex link pullet yesterday. They had been out free-ranging and I called them in to the shade of the pen. She made a bee line for the pen, threw her head back and flopped around. When I got to her she was very limp, but alive. Tried to cool her off and put her in front of the water cooler. She passed quickly. Can't imagine it being heat since she had been so active before. I'm thinking it may have been something she ate or a ground wasp sting.

We have had about 10 losses this year...and so few in the past month.

Anyone?

Bake them whole....trim top and root. A little butter, salt, pepper and herbs if you like. Cook until tender...depends on the size....should be able to slide a fork in it. 350 degrees. A twist on them is wrap in foil with slices of onions and wrapped in bacon.
