Javis-- I do understand not turning the incubator off-- but sometimes you must take a break! I was just getting ready to lay off the hatching, since my guineas are done laying. However, stupid hawks have decided I need to have some replacement birds. I am going to set a few days worth of chicken eggs, they will be barnyard mix. I had them all separated until the heat went crazy. Our barn lean-to seemed cooler than any of the other coops, so I let them all sleep in there. They have loved the cool barn dirt & the nice shade.
I was trying to count birds again last night, think I was around 55-60. Before this I had 75+. I do need a rir rooster, would like somethig not related to any of mine, wander if Michael has one? If you run across one lmk Michael. I know a guy out in the mountains that has one, but don't want to drive an hour for a hatchery rooster.
Soon as it cools off I will separate my rir & wellsummers again, but for now I am really enjoying have them in one place, makes chicken chores much faster! I only lost 1 rir (out of 40+) to the heat (he got out the cage & couldn't get back in) but I lost at least 5 welsummers (out of 20) to the heat (they died in their coops, even though I wet the coops& they had cold water & ice). None of my barnyard mix died in the heat. Anyone else have a breed that did better in the heat than the others?
