***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My Okra plants are amazingly beautiful, and they are just the clemson spineless, not the fancy orange or red ones. Tall, lush, thick, green etc............... but not an okra in sight!!!!! I figure there is a little to much nitrogen for them.

I bought the egyptian walking onions online, they will self perpetuate so once I get them established they will keep me in onions for the rest of my life!!!!! The onion bulbs will be smaller, but just put 2 in a recipe, after all the best things come in small packages don't they!!!!

I have tried beans several times this year w/o success, I am going to try one more time this fall I have yellow bean seeds left.

I plan on hitting the ground running this spring too. Can't wait to see how successful the chicken garden will be and the changes I have planned for from this seasons problems.

I have identified several issues this year and researched some potential problem solvers so we'll see.

I can't pick mine fast enough! Seems some grow too big overnight. They can hide in the leaves till they get too big. Have to toss half of them because they are too big. Too bad the chickens don't like them much. Cantalope has grow well too but not as much flavor as last year.

My cantaloupe has been great this year, sweet juicy, very tastey. I grew a chantaries variety.

Wow 5gal in 45 min! I know okra does damage easy & doesn't have much shelf life. The bucket the man showed me was a black feed type pail. It is smaller than the 3 gal buckets I use for oats. Might have been 1.5 gal. But I don't think it was much bigger. Maybe it took so long because of how he cuts the pods off. I think snipping them with shears (one handed) would be much faster than using a pocket knife (2 handed). I dont worry too much about picking time for personal consumption, but when I see what stuff cost it helps me understand pricing. Like asparagus, plants must be 3 yrs old to harvest & can only be harvested for a few weeks. So I understand why it is one of the most expensive veggies I buy. Hope next yr to get an asparagus bed prepped with a few dozen plants of my own to enjoy!

I found a great deal on asparagus seed, (would have cost a small fortune for how many I wanted for the crowns) I got 250 for $4 including shipping. All male a mary or martha washington version. I plan on planting major asparagus beds!!!!! I found some crowns on sale earlier this year and planted those they all did well except for the purple ones. Everything I have read said they are pretty easy to start from seed and only take an extra year to harvest well worth the savings to me over the crowns.

Yes, the seeds do start easily. Be sure to pull the female plants as soon as you identify them or you will have asparagus plants coming up everywhere. The female plants put a lot of effort into producing more seed whereas the male plants make better spears. Birds have been seeding asparagus in all my flowerbeds. I transplant those back to the garden and judiciously cull the female plants from the garden beds. We pick enough spears to share with family and have plenty to can. A properly cared for asparagus bed can last 40 years. One of my beds has been going strong for 15 years just from plants I moved with us from OKC when we bought the farm.

A few months ago I posted about over-grown okra pods. You may not have read it, but here's an idea. You can dry those big pods upside down, then around Christmas time, spray paint them followed with glitter and they make beautiful ice sickles for decorating. My mother belongs to the OKC Garden Council, and every year they decorate a Christmas tree with home grown items like that. Gourds are good to use too, as are most anything growin in or around the garden/yard.

when I first saw this, the caption read, 'Officer Swanson in hot pursuit', the problem is that he is in the back seat.

Morning all! Well I was out feeding and watering the critters and birds and dumped a water all over me so had to come in and change! Decided to stop by and say hello! Nice this morning, thinking of going for a walk and collecting the g. pigs a sack full of grass. I have about cut everything in my yard and my neighbors! They sure can eat a lot but they are so cute its worth the extra efffort.

Hope everyone has a great morning and find no varmit attacks occured last night!

I too would love to start some from seed, but I will probally buy a handful of mature crowns too. Starting a few crowns will ease the pain of the wait! My greenhouse is still in pieces in the barn, by the time we got it moved here from town it was too hot to put it back together! Hopefully DH gets it put together this fall.

Nankat with your asparagus bed do you have it in full sun or partial shade? I planned on setting mine in partial shade. Was worried about it baking in the sun. Do you get about 4 weeks of harvest? About which month? My family only likes fresh asparagus, they won't eat it canned or frozen. -- think they are food snobs.

I planted some rhubarb this spring -- it was from atwoods so I don't have high hopes. I plans on ordering some good crowns to plant it again next spring. DH loves rhubarb. I know it isn't suppose to thrive as well here, but I have seen a few that are able to grow it. I am going to set it in partial shade as well.

Those who don't like okra, have you tried grilling the small pods? Yum! Fresh okra is so different than the stuff @ the store. Oldest DD thinks pickled okra is a daily part of her diet!

Suppose to put eggs in the incubator today, unless the girls go in strike & don't give me enough eggs to fill the tray.

Now that I finally figured out how to upload photos, these are my girls.

These are my "golden Girls". Juvenile Golden Lace Wyandottes

And these are my Astralorp/GL Wyandotte mix and what I believe to be a BO in the background.

Sorry the pics are not the best. These are on my cell, and we are still taming them, so they won't let me get too close.

I don't think they are close to laying yet. Trying to be patient.
