***OKIES in the BYC III ***

A freezer that has a good seal will help your feed last longer....you don't run it, just store in it.
Of course, Donnie's suggestion for adding flock grower is great....or....could be a tongue in cheek for "grow the flock"

Only used two heat lamps night before last night in the brooder room. Somehow one got shattered...in the 3 to 4 week old pen and even though the other one was 24 inches over from them, the chicks piled up and smothered five. So last evening, I turned on all three and everyone was cozy this morning.
Cut up two pumpkins and put a piece in both brooder pens...thinking since they had not had pumpkin before that it would be enough.

Both pens went after it like carnivorous raptors running with fibers in their mouths like worms chasing each other around the floor. So, each pen got another piece to share. The adult pens always love pumpkin...and they love the seeds...makes a great natural wormer too.

We have been working in the garden and have onions, two types of potatoes, peas, collards, spinach, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, lettuces, radish, seeded and have potas of tomatoes and peppers, chard, herbs up in the hot tub room. Those are ready to move to individual pots to keep growing till planting. I will buy some eggplant this year. Trying 15 varieties of tomatoes to find some that tolerate our hot summers. And 4 different types of peppers. This year, I need to grow more birdhouse gourds so will arch a cattle panel over two beds and let the gourds take it over. The Jeruselem artichokes came in the mail so those need a spot cleared. And there are beds for squash, cucumbers, corn, okra still to turn.

Grandchildren are coming ...with their Mom...so will enjoy them for a few hours. Then finish potting baby plants.
Ichiban eggplant is a great, small variety that is really tender and grows like crazy in Oklahoma's heat.

Well I was walking around the pens to make sure everybody was ok and I noticed that my newly acquired Splash Americauna pullet had passed. This makes 2 birds in the last month that seemed healthy and then all of a sudden I find the laying over stiff. Oh well, the life of a chicken farmer.
Oh no! That happened to the hen in my avitar. I so wish she was still around. It will be hard to find another Blue Mottled as nice as her. I didn't get any Blues from all the chicks i hatched from her last year.

Ducklings & chicks are hatching away, and the guinea pigs alarm has been going off. Our house is far from quiet! DH was hating the GP, but he spent 30 min playing with it & feeding it treats. Guess that means he is coming around right?

When I refilled my waterer in my pen today, one of my hens flew onto my shoulder. I didn't think RIR's were that friendly. Whoever had these before me must have spent a lot of time with them.

My newly aquired buff Brahma chicks are chirping away in my spare bedroom, It's good to hear the sound of chicks again.
my RIR Donna is one of the friendliest and nosiest of them all- and seldom has health issues- they are good birds

Hello all.
WOW took awhile to catch up on this thread!! 4200+ post takes some time lol
Just wanted to intro myself. Im Kinda an older model. Getting back into Poultry. I live about 30 min west of Tulsa.
Plan on Raisng Silver Laced Wyandottes. May dabble in Golden Laced too. Mostly just like the overall looks of the breed
and they are multipurpose (Fried Chicken AND omlets lol) I have some Hatchery Stock for layers only. Not planning on breeding these at all.
Will slowly replace them with my own stuff later on. I purchased some hatching eggs from Scott Carter (Carters Legacy Farms) out of Alabama . dunno how many of them
I will end up with they shipped and spent the night in Tulsa @21 degrees. 6 are developing (not counting till they hatch lol). Working on getting other breeder stock for breeding.
Ordered all pullets but cpl of them are cockrels im pretty sure. They will probably end covered in lowerys season salt in a few months!!
The Pullets are going on 5 weeks and growing nicely
Looking forward to interaction with the local chicken peeps

Morning Okies

Just finished breakfast, so now I need to drive little bro back to his rig. He didn't want to bring the tractor and trailer to the house because we have narrow wood bridges that a big rig shouldn't cross. I'll update everybody on his recent adventure out of the country in a little bit.

Mom's struggling with a cough. Looks like a trip to the doctor before our goat delivery is in order.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day : )

Welcome!

Good morning friends and neighbors!

It`s a craptacular start to Spring! Besides the up and coming cold rainy week ahead, My Rooster went and got himself killed by dogs and the girls quit laying and quit the nest!

On a lighter note....here is a picture of a recent Bigfoot siting near Tahlequah, OK! :)
