***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi y'all, just wanted to check in as a new okie member from the SE edge of Edmond, near Arcadia lake. We just got 5 chicks this past week and I must admit they are the cutest ones!!! We already have their coop built with an attached covered dog run for their protected yard. We then put the rabbit fencing around he bottom dug down a foot or so and then concreted in trying to protect against varmints etc. my biggest fear at this point for this area is the snakes. Have any of you lost chickens to snakes around here? What else can we do to protect our chicks? I was reading some of the other forums and they were talking about just picking up snakes they find in their coop and relocating them. . . . I am TERRIFIED of any living snake. . . . I do not want to ever find one in my chicken coop,what can I do to make sure I never see one in there? Scaredy cat in Edmond!!!!

chickens can kill some snakes. Also have the boys in your house pee around the coop. Helps with snakes and coons.

If the wire you buried is still a few feet high around the pen, that may be enough. Unless there is something they can climb close to the pen, like a tree.

Did you use that rabbit wire with the 1" x 2" holes or chicken wire that is all hexagons or a smaller mesh rabbit wire? Anything bigger than 1/4" hardware cloth and snakes can get through but honestly unless you just have a major infestation of mice you shouldn't have problems with snakes. Your chickens will eat the smaller ones. Coons and possums and skunks can reach through any wire bigger than an inch and will pull the heads off the birds and owls and hawks come by air. Those are the usual critters that cause chicken demise.

Good morning friends and neighbors! I hope y`all had a great weekend! We managed to get the yard tools cleaned, tuned and we got the first cut of the season. I turned a couple of flower beds and they are ready for planting......the yard is looking good!

Hello Everybody!!! Sorry it has been so long since I have been on here but life has just been so crazy busy.
Sounds like everyone is getting ready for Spring chicken season. I know we are at my place.

I see people talking about POOPS stuff. I am ignorant to this, can you tell me about it?

People of Oklahoma Poultry Swap.. It is a time to get together with friends and indulge in our chicken addictions. hehehe!

What a difference a day makes. Sunshine was up walking this morning and her fever is better...at least the swelling in her face is down and her nose was wet. She took about a cup of milk before quitting so still had to tube her. But progress is progress. All her body functions are working and Mom is licking the heck out of her face and ears. Mom walked into the squeeze chute this morning just like a milk cow to her stall. Whew!
Had another baby thru the night and it was up nursing at 6 am. Mom is doing great.
The difference in rain and temperatures knocked Sunshine down for the count. The new baby is up and bucking already.

SIL is coming this morning to load a trailer with aged manure for his garden beds...we have plenty. Hubby shoves it up into a pile with the hay and turns it frequently with the tractor. We always have a ready supply of manure compost every year for the gardens.

Have more seeds to plant this morning too and then I'll begin banding the older chicks. Have some in the brooder that need to go to the outside brooder pen too.

Guess ill make NewCastle on the 20th. Hope someone posts about the sale this evening...and any plans for the get together that is in the planning stages...let me know what I can do to help.

Taking a break from the yard/garden work right now. Working on some experiments. (shocking as that might be!!!!! lol lol lol) I have been burying 5 gall buckets all through the chickens yard 3 so far but have planned a couple more, then filling w/ dry grass roots and chicken poop, then covering w/ a laundry basket inverted over it. Going to try and make all you can eat buffets for the girls w/ black soldierfly larva. If it goes according to the grand plan in my head it should be all hands off after they are set, just refilling w/ chicken poop every so often, and it's not like they are ever going to stop making poop! I won't be able to gather and store for the winter, but should grow them during normal BSF season.
