I'm hanging out at the library for a few minutes I thought I'd pop in and see how Ya'll are, There were more POOPS shirts at the Newcastle than I've seen in a while was a blast visiting and I'm looking forwards to another POOPS, I guess I'll try to hop on here once in a while but so far I'm over 2500 posts behind so I'll have to wait till I get my net back in a month or so this just isn't the place to do that LOL

I hope everyone's doing well! Catch up with you'ns later

Kass hope you aren't as wore out as I am from planting today! I split some more ornamental grass clumps and replanted all the plants I had taken with me when we moved! I am taking the grasses from around the pool. Decided to try something different. I have dug 6 clumps so far. Those six divided into 34 gallon size clumps! and I have ten more clumps to go! Sure hope the craigslist ad works so I can get rid of some of them!lol. Speaking of craigs,I got another good deal there this morning. Six year old americanna hens for only $6 each! Last ones at the auction I saw sell went for $10 - 22! I had already gotten a nice roo so now I set to go!
Another nice day here, storms comming thursday so I am trying to get lots of planting done so the rain will settle them in. Need to start on more pens too! I need a couple of clones!lol

It was nice meeting some of you fine folks at the Newcastle auction. I never thought I would stay up so late to bid on chickens that I didn't really need. Now I have to build a new coop for bantams. Can't wait until POOPS.

Okay, I have a question and I know I'm behind the curve here. I have a hen sitting on eggs that should hatch on Thursday. Just in time for the miserable weather. I keep my birds in a coop with a large attached run and now have a portable chicken tractor that I had intended to keep the new mom and chicks in. Well, now that we are expecting freezing temps I am rethinking this. Would I be okay putting the mom and chicks in a large cardboard box in the garage (temp controlled) until the weather breaks? Will the chicks be okay with her in there with them?? If she is in there with them will I need a heat lamp too?

I am realizing that I should have thought this through a bit better now.

Right there with you Okla, spent all day trying to get ready for the rain coming, planting gardens and making insect growing areas outside in the chickens yard.

OklaDoodle...your granddaughter is gorgeous!
Muesky and Elwood, good to see you posting again. Hope to see you at POOPS.

to the new folks.

Well, the calf Sunshine just did an amazing recovery by this morning. At 6:30 am, she was actually up standing when we went to the barn and eagerly sucked on the bottle...took 7.5 cups of milk in her first feeding of the day...yesterday she only took 5 total and then had to be tubed.
After our doctor appointments this morning, we put mom cow in the squeeze chute and put Sunshine on her to see if we could get her to suckle. At first she balked and sulled up but we kept pushing her in and squeezing off milk on her face. When she finally got the idea, she went after all four teats and suckled until Mom got tired. She is bedded down in the new stall the boys made yesterday by taking off part of the tin on the sw corner of the barn and facing it for a sliding door. The floor in the barn is concrete so we added panels and hay for a 10 by 10 stall with a gate from the inside. The rains will not get this baby again.
Had a new calf born yesterday and one this evening. Glad these moms chose sunny days. Both took right to their first babies and the calves had no problems. The one born yesterday could be a good rodeo bull the way is could spring up off all fours and do a 180 in mid air.

Chickens did not like the wind today. Watched an Aussie try to run against the wind to get back in the coop....looked like she was running in place. Moved 3 week olds from the brooder to the brooder room floor pen. Took pictures of the newest babies...had a Blue and a Black Wyandotte with great yellow legs...

yep...my legs really are yellow.

Worked a little in the garden getting another bed ready for planting. Looks like we will have two really cold nights so will need to take all the plant flat inside and will need to bring straw bales down from the back barn to cover the potatoes that are already up..

Either a cage or a box big enough for them to move around. Wood shavings, sand or dry hay, and include food and water...no extra heat as mom will take care of the chicks. You could also leave her in the coop with her eggs/chicks.
