***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hearts4animals, I wouldn't worry over the chick. There is always one that is a little more timid than the others. She will do fine, but prob always stay in the background & be over ran. Don't worry she wont go hungry. I have several pullets that hardly free range & stick close to the coop, several are smaller or have disabilities (seriously Taron has a thing for special needs chickens). While the other are free ranging I will sneak down, lock the coop & give them extra feed or treats.

LonnyandRinda, I may have to trade you some rhodebars for legbars once mine are laying. How awesome it would be if all birds were autosexing. Well maybe not, think of what would happen to all those potential roosters.

Went out to clean the coops ahead of the storm and got the nastiest look from Buffy the bantam. She was all, "Excuse me, I am trying to lay an egg here, treat lady." :D

Hehehe!!! Oh my, your are ON for a trade! Totally wasn't going to get into rhodebars for a few years but hubby's been trying to talk me into them.... this may just be the arm twist I needed.

Yeah it is a little sad about all the little roosters, so far most of my extra baby roos have become feeders for a friend's pet vulture (appropriately named Stinky). At least they have a use. But I can't bring myself to take only roosters to an auction, knowing I'll get next to nothing for them and they have a dubious future, plus the complication of cross breed CLs cropping up in the area.

Okay, so today I went out to the coop to gather eggs; our laying flock is free range so that they can have a lot of space. Anyways, I spotted our SplashXPorcelain cochin roo, Splash (named by a kid, yes. LOL!) attacking Sparkle, our Cuckoo Marans hen. No, he wasn't making a hopeless attempt at mating; he was literally flying through the air and slashing her back with his spurs, tearing deep gashes.

She fought back and did some damage to his com and wattles, but he did more damage: Sparkle's limping. Now, Splash seems to be a sweet boy towards people, so we really don't want to kill him; just find a new home, if that's at all possible. So I'm turning to the BYC Okies for help: does anyone want this rooster?

We also have 2 Polish cockerels if anyone would want those; they did have a bad case of lice because they came in contact with some birds that I bought that were infested with it, but I think they're clean. I will make sure to triple-check to make sure. Hope that doesn't scare anyone off.

Oh you guys all got me hooked on chickens, no way am I keeping the addiction to myself now! I had ZERO chickens at this time last year. Can you believe that???? Now I have breeding pens for 4 breeds, I'm super involved in getting Cream Legbars into the APA, and dare I even give my chicken count??? I'll only count the adults... 38. Two grower pens and two 60+ brooders, a GQF and a styrofoam incubator. I'm in trouble now! ;)

Cream Legbars are fantastic. Friendly and great layers, large blue eggs, AUTOSEXING CHICKS! Cute little crests, too. Love them! I was planning on bringing my Cream Legbars to poops, but I may be sold out of chicks then, we will see. They fly out the door as fast as I can hatch them. I am breeding towards the UK standard for the breed, as that is what we are working to get approved in the US.

Here's a few more silly pics I took at easter:

Three White Leghorn X Cream Legbar and one recessive white Cream Legbar female (third from left- you can see how her head fluff poofs up- she should have a nice crest!)

Leghorn X Cream Legbar, black Ameraucana, blue Ameraucana

Female Cream Legbar in the back, male Cream Legbar driving the tractor.

My littlest one, Lydia.

Second youngest, Jonathan.

I'd buy those type of peeps any day. No sugar high either. Love the pic.

honestly, if he is young, one option is pen him alone for a bit till his hormones settle down, but would you want this guy passing on that temperment ? Even if you sell him, and he is a beauty- i wouldn't want him in the gene pool if he is mean- odd for a cochin to do that

Galahad was out with the lady's and had to get a pic of him... he is quite a guy- he is a cochin with an awesome personality

How did everyone fair last night? We have ice on the trees & fence, no real damage that I can see yet. Put all the plants in the hoop house. Haven't looked at them, just don't want to face any potential losses. The should be fine since no precipitation was able to touch their leaves. Fingers crossed!!!
Taron opened the coop so the birds could free range. None have yet taken the opportunity, today they smart birds & want to stay inside where it is warm.

Good Morning Okie BYCers!

Well seems like everyone in the yard made it through the night. I have a few that refuse to go into the coop, no matter what the weather. Got a bunch of stink eye this morning because you know "chicken lady" controls the weather, too. hehehe!

I am going to set up the food list for POOPS today. It will posted it here and on the POOPS thread. If everyone could just pm me with what they would like to bring, that would be really helpful.

Hope everyone is having a great day!

If Splash is that mean to his girls, what will he do to a little child?
I have a Birchen Wyandotte rooster that is going thru "boot" camp right now. He is a great type and is a gorgeous bird from one of my project pens. He comes at me and no one else. But, if retraining doesn't cut it, he goes in a frying pan.
I have never had a Cochin rooster show any hostility towards hens or people...and rarely with each other.

Hope everyone survived the freezing rain last night. We had temps in the low 30s but not freeze. Checked the pregs ad we fed the herd...none are calving..so hope they are waiting for warmer temps.

Candled eggs yesterday and both incubators are holding well. 36 go into lockdown this Thursday for a Sunday hatch. The next batch will hatch the following Sunday.

Sunshine is doing better on nursing. The cow still won't let her nurse unless she is in the squeeze chute...still working on that. The swelling is down in the Cale's leg..just the foot and ankle now. She is walking much better and is enjoying a nice dry stall during this weather. She is eager to feed each time we go out and follows us around as we put the cow in the chute....nuzzling to the human nether regions gets a little bothersome until the cow is ready.

Put some more seeds into flats this morning...getting ready for when I can put plants out into the garden. Seeded some flowers this time too. Love flowers mixed in with my vegetables to lure the pollinators in.

Enjoy your day!
