***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Yes anytime I have a chick with leg/balance/head tilt problems I give them some baby vitamins like Poly-vi-sol (make sure to get the "without iron" formula) from the drugstore. One drop two or three times per day. Most chicks can be saved between the vitamins and a splint for a few days.

Yes splint it. A bandaid works really well, but sometimes I use masking tape. You just need something to hold their legs in the proper parallel position while they strengthen the muscles.
If the chick is feather-legged I use a bandaid and put the non-sticky middle part around the leg and stick the sticky parts together in the middle/between the legs. Then when it is time to take the bandaid off it doesn't pull feathers off. Sometimes the bandaids just fall off on their own when the chick gets to stranding up well.

Just spent time catching up on the thread...saw some new folks who have posted...Welcome to them and some old folks...Good to see you back.

Am babysitting the grandsons today and will be back home sometime mid morning. The little boys wanted a pajama party so we read stories for quite a long time...finally got them settled at 9:30 pm..well past their bedtimes. Dylan wants a chicken for his bedroom...They live in Edmond...don't think that will happen any time soon....he finally agreed he could come feed the flock.....he is 5 and the little one is 3. This grandmother needs to go to bed.

Where did u order them from? We want to get some?

I ordered them from Ideal Poultry. http://www.ideal-poultry.com/

I just heard (on another thread) that they are not "show quality" silkies. But I don't care. We just want them as pets/egg layers.
I picked Ideal Poultry because they only have a $25 minimum (which is 8 silkies + shipping)on ordering chicks. Every other place I found online that has silkies wants you to buy around 15 or more chicks as a minimum.

We have had an interesting day on the farm...and exciting too... thud:

Took the dogs out and peeked in on Sunshine in the barn. Hallelujah! Eureka! Mom cow is in the stall with Sunshine and baby in nursing away! And she has been all day.

The rest of the day started off with the sound of a chick in the incubator...under the egg turner...set on March 23... Due on Sunday the 13th. I was going to put those eggs in lock-down this evening. Went ahead and started lockdown this morning. Already have three in the brooder and 6 pipped and zipping. Never had so eager a hatch... lol.

Then after the breakfast dishes, went with the boys to feed cows and check the pregs. A first timer was going into labor early in their pasture Insead of the lot by the house. Some first timers can fool you into a false sense of security in thinking they are weeks away. We kept an eye on her and just before dropping her calf, she decides the pond bank was a good spot...with a little herding we were able to get to move her and the newborn to a safer spot. For a first time mom, she did remarkably well ending her calf and standing still for it to nurse. You would have thought she was an old pro.

Next, after feeding and watering the chickens and changing hay in nest boxes, noticed a heifer in the lot by the house was in the early stages of labor. She had been holding her tail high this morning and I warned hubby she might have it today. Hard labor started at 5 pm and just befor 6 pm she had her calf. Once the calf was up, the circle dance began...mom moving backwards and calf nuzzling...for 30 minutes until the calf wore her down. We enjoyed the show as the calf with a full belly began bucking and cavorting around Mom.

Will be checking the hatcher thru the evening. The first egg to hatch was one of the last collected on the 23rd from the CW pen and tucked in the incubator. The shell was really clean on the inside...an indication the chick was really full term....on day 18.75.

Do you still see Jarvis? Can you tell him about poops? Also where is donnie?

They are very pretty!

Those look like dark Brahmas especially the hens. Another breed I want!

Hi           I don't know if anybody remembers me. I haven't posted in months. I have been super busy with foster kids. I have a question. I know it has been discussed on here. I have a chick with legs that turn outward. I can't remember what it is called or if there is a treatment for it. Any advice would be appreciated. I can post pics in a few.

Welcome back!
Where did u order them from? We want to get some?
Betsy has gorgeous silkies

I think we're going to get to go to POOPS after all. Brother from China will be in Texas, a three-day event for us requiring someone to take care of our animals. We get to see him in Texas at least three times a year, he was here (in Texas and HERE) in December, will be back in September, and we're going to try to go see him in China later on. I really need to sell some silkies and especially showgirls, and a one-day trip would be much easier on us! I have some really nice silkies and showgirls in several colors. Was feeling sad about missing my POOPS friends!

Yeah! Besty I will let Taron know. I think she was wanting a few silkies. However, she has to have a plan on where to keep them before she can commit.
