***OKIES in the BYC III ***

So I just saw a coyote apx 50 ft from our house and the chicken coop. Any suggestions on how to deal with coyotes? He was on the other side of our barbed wire fence, but I'm sure he could easily jump over it. I am hoping the coop my hubby built could hold up an attack, but it scares me to think of my poor girls being out there with that thing!!

Welcome to all the newbies!
Wow I am not partial to the nn's at all but Kass you have the cutest ones I have ever seen! Makes me want to get some eggs into ye olde incubator! As it stands now i have a ton of guinea eggs and a neighbor who wants keets so I have a legitimate excuse to fire it up. I bet I can sneak a bantam egg or two in there!

One weird thing I have noticed is that I have never actually seen the guinea cocks cover the hens...I see a whole lot of chasing but no breeding...either they manage to find a guinea version of a Motel 6 for privacy or there really is no breeding happening. Anyone else notice this? I have almost 30 guineas out there...and I would guess there MUST be some breeding going on somewhere lol! I hope I do have some fertile eggs to set!

12 or 20 gauge or a good shot from a rifle.

I lose a few birds each year to predation of some sort...hawks or dogs or coyotes and whatever else eats chickens or guineas. Of course this always happens when the birds free range. We built our coops in mind that predation prevention was key...we have six foot chainlink on all of the runs and the coops are made like small houses but are shed size. Windows are covered with industrial wire and racoon proof snaps...but you get the idea...prevention! We have never lost any birds when they are locked in their runs during the day or coops overnight. Any predator that can be legally shot that continues to show itself finds itself being shot at. I am sorry if this seems too blunt but it works the best for us.

Crunchyjeepmomma - a few good dogs will take care of those coyotes or if you shoot one & let it lay all its friends catch on that your place is dangerous. My dogs chase them good. DH got 1 couple yrs ago, never seen another by the barn & use to see them daily.

Guineas do their business in secret. I have only ever seen it happen twice. Have a RIR roo in love with a guinea hen & if he gets near her she flies away! Hope to hatch some of their eggs, just for my own amusement & curiosity.

There are a couple of things you can do. You can have your husband go out and urinate all around the surrounding area.. This may work. Another thing is when you see the 'yote, if you have a gun, shoot at it, if it is safe to do so. If you don't have a gun, then come out yelling and throwing things... this is often plenty to scare one off. A lot of times, if you scare one bad enough, they won't be back. Dogs are always a great option, provided they won't eat your chickens as well... Needs to be a breed big enough that the coyotes won't eat them also.
If there is NO DANGER of other domestic dogs in the area, you can set a snare or two (youtube how to do it). They are easier to set than traps.
I use a combination of dogs and lead.
ETA: Snares are easier to set than leg traps, but they are lethal. If there are ANY pet dogs in your area, don't do it.
