***OKIES in the BYC III ***

The guy you hatched all the games for is a coworker of mine, when he told me he took so many eggs to cement for someone to hatch for him, I knew it had to be you and your DD.
Guessing it is the same guy I remember you talking about last yr that had tons of game eggs. Small world.

Congrats to all with your hatches...so fun watching those babies pop out of their shell...never gets old.

Beautiful day here although it was a long one. Started by sorting cattle and tagging those cows who had lost their ear tags over the winter...necessary to match up with the right calf numbers before we take to the summer pastures. Then I switched around some of the breed pens and ivemeced all the birds in their pens for mites. Seems this is the time of year those beasties show up. Cleaned two wild bird nests out of the rafters in the barn. Sprayed down the layer room with spray while those birds were out free ranging. Monitored a heifer having her first calf. Then we took little Sunshine to the vet for an assessment on her foot. Her mom stepped on her foot again. Looks like she will end up losing part or all of it. That poor baby calf has had so much to deal with in her three weeks of life! Next we rode thru the pasture checking the herd and on the group in the back pasture. Prepped dinner and while the potatoes were baking was able to replenish feed and water and gather eggs. After dinner, baths and last round, I can finally sit for a while. Just before dark, I'll take the dogs out and shut up the juveniles in their coop.
It is supposed to rain tomorrow...so I will work on boxes for transporting the chickens to POOPs and the auction...I'm estimating there will be close to 30 Cochins and 30 Wyandottes and some layer replacements....I'm gonna need a lot of boxes......

Thrush is a yeast infection from my understanding. Treat it with over counter yeast infection ointment. Also probiotics. Hope it helps!!!

Taron found Fat Louie sick today. Both eyes swelled up & not looking good. Hope he improves quickly she is very upset at the thought of loosing him. He was the first chicken she ever hatched.
Also 3 of the 5 golden lakenvelders I bought at Newcastle have died. Auction chicks are as much of a gamble as auction eggs.

So sorry to hear! Hopefully you will have caught whatever is the problem soon enough. Were the lakenvelders from last week? - those first days are always a bit tough... :(

So I am on day ten of my first attempt at incubating eggs. We candled and weighed them tonight. Out of the dozen Cochin eggs I got from Rebecca one had a blood ring but the rest look good. The dozen Spitzhauben eggs I bought at the Blanchard auction 2 had blood rings and 3 were infertile and all 4 of the Japanese Bantam eggs from my breeding pair look great. They go into lockdown the day before POOPS. Hopefully the rest of the babies will make it. I'm pretty fired up to see them hatch. I think I have found a new addiction!

Poor Sunshine! Still rooting for her though!!! Do you use cow ivomec for the birds? I had heard that you can use ivomectrin for the scaly leg mites and had wondered if it was the same as what we use for cattle. How many head do you have? We have just 35 or so, but they are scattered between several pastures - so it seems I am driving more than actually walking around the cattle. Still waiting for 4 calves that should've already been here or will any minute. They are all probably waiting for us to leave for the weekend before showing up!

Bardies the chicks were for this past weekend. They looked to have been several wks old already. Many times they get stressed from the auction & new surroundings. My nephew Lucas came home with 9 chicks (that his mom let him keep here). Of course they are all still healthy!

Wiskey incubators are dangerous addiction. Gets more expensive by the wk. The more you hatch the more money you give to the feed store.

Nana I do hope the calf can still live a happy life.
