I went to the OKC zoo yesterday. First time in years. Some of the new exhibits are world class. Over hearing people identify animals made my day....calling the bobcat a swift fox and guineafowl a quail and then a henny. And of course an okapie is what you get when you put zebras and giraffes together.

I LOVE going to zoos, and here in OK we are fortunate to have two awesome zoos that have been making amazing changes and additions especially considering our population. Tulsa zoo has added several new great exhibits this year too. I am going to Tulsa zoo Wend.

Kass,

I love the flamingos....too bad we can't raise those, huh?

I loved the aviary in the Oklahoma plains exhibit. It was cool to have a pheasant walk by in touching distance.

Fat Louie ate some so hopefully he is improving. None of our others are sick, thankfully.
Nana would love if you could send me your soap files. I am always up for trying new recipes!
Going to the zoo is awesome, especially when the animals are out & playing. We LOVE Animal Kingdom. We usually spend 2 days there. Think the Kansas City Zoo is one of our favorites, but we haven't been in yrs.

On the ACV I buy a gallon with mother & gallon without & mix them. Then you have 2 gallons of good stuff within a few months. And you can avoid buying the pricey stuff as long as you always keep some to start the next cheap gallon.

has anyone used sand here in Oklahoma I know they have a post on here about it but was wondering if anyone here has tried it and how it works in their coop
I use the deep litter system which incoporates sand, oak leaves, and pine chips. Though I have found that the chicks simply scratch away the pine chips and are perfectly fine with just sand. They scratched all the shavings down to the end underneath their roost

which worked out, becase it makes it easier to clean out.
First, layer of oak leaves

Next, about a six inch layer of sand. I live on a sandy hilltop, so whatever got dug out when I put the hardware cloth and layer of leaves down just went right back in. Here is a pic of most of the shavings scraped back down to the sand.

And last, a layer of shavings. You can see in the pic that the shavings are thicker in this area. They don't tend to hang out on this end much. I did clean the poop buildup out yesterday from under the roost and added it to my compost barrel. the shavings made that a snap. My next project is a poop hammock!

I think sand works just fine!
