***OKIES in the BYC III ***

looks like my bantam roo Captain is nearly recovered from his thrush- that vetrycin did amazing- i did have to clear his beak periodically while it was clearing up- he is eating like he is trying to make up for lost time, i am thrilled! So the bantam integration is almost complete, going to give him a few more days to eat witthout competition. He has Dora for company, his favorite girl, she is a bit droopy herself, i am thinking the mites must be immune to ivermec, is there something else i can do to eleiminate them?

Those birds of betsy's are wonderful, everyone i have from her has one trait that no others do, they can hop fences or will look for ways out- i assume her birds are just smarter! The two on the right are from Betsy's birds- Tiffany and Beep

Sad we missed the auction this wk. Just didn't have a few extra hours to spare.
Caught up on the 100+ post I was behind. Been so busy with house stuff I haven't had a chance to visit BYC in over a wk. Some how I unexpectedly sold the single wide & they want to pic it up on the 15th, so now not only are we trying to rush to get the new house semi complete, but we also have to move everything within a wk. Thankful we sold it so easy, so I can't complain.
We lost all but 1 speckled Sussex chick. They were being raised by 2 mommas & just starting to roost. The other night when it got in the 50s they all go chilled. The mommas didn't keep them warm. Was so sad since I didn't think to give them a light since they were with 2 broody hens! Also expect to loose Fat Louie any day. He looks rough, not really an illness just been going down hill over the past few wks. Tonight he couldn't even stand, but culling is out of the question as far as Taron is concerned.

Most exciting news of the wk is 11 puppies!!!! Yes 11! We lost one yesterday & another has a dead front leg so she will be culled tomorrow. The daddy is BarnSwallows Pyrenees Bailiff & a Pyrenees Anatolian mix we acquired 9 wks ago. Of course she went into heat as soon as she arrived. She is an amazing mom, but I feel so bad for her having pups in the heat of the summer. I certainly don't want more pups so we will get her spayed ASAP.

Anyone in the market for a guinea pig? DH is not excited to have Taron moving guinea pigs into her new bed room. Not sure if she will be able to smuggle them in when he is at work or not.

Robin,
Try the Ivomec paste, I found it very easy this year by spreading it bread and giving that to the birds. I am really liking the paste better as I do not have to pull all the birds, just go to the pen and give each one a small piece of bread.
The real problem with mites and lice is that they are seldom caught till it is nearly out of control. I have more trouble during the breeding season since I handle them a lot less.

Hello fellow Oklahomans, I'm looking to get a few hens here in Tulsa, and don't know where to start. Does anybody know of a breeders I should go to, and what breads are best for laying. I will be able to have them out in a large yard but what size coop do I need for at night. I'll appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

Good mid morning OKIES.
Having some iced coffee on a break from cleaning pens. Decided to go ahead and spray down all the walls and roosts too....leaving the 10 hole nest box alone for now since there are nine...count them nine.... broodies on eggs. Using Permethrin spray and Lemon scented Pinesol.
Should finish the tot pen when I go back out. Going down to get the chain link gate from the back 40 barn to be the opening.
The boys fixed a leak in the tubing to the swamp cooler by totally replacing the water line with a garden hose....should last a lot longer than the 1/4 inch tubing. They put the reduction valve at the cooler reservoir so only had to use 18 inches of tubing.

Carl, Good to see you on again. Hope you have recovered from the storm damage in your area. Great idea for the Ivomec paste and bread....will have to use that. I've been trying to hatch Rosecomb eggs and not getting very far. The fertility is good, but the chicks quit about day 14 or once placed in the hatcher. The CW, Cochin and d'Anvers eggs are getting about 50% due to the heat at lay. The incubator and hatcher are sitting at 100 degrees and the hatcher is holding about 65 -75 % humidity. I have egg in one last batch in the incubator due on the 15th and a few eggs under the broodies. Then I'm just going to wait until fall to hatch. In the meantime, anything I should feed the breeders to improve viability? Using S&S layer pellets with a little Calf Manna and a little scratch treat. I have Red Cell.

Robyn, I put 1 cc of Ivomec in a gallon of water for the birds in their coop at night for 3 days. This worms and get mites and I don't have to catch each bird. Although, if the toenails need trimming, then I catch and clip and Ivomec at the same time. Bathing with then using Adams Flea and Tick dip is a good way to get the mites also. Don't rinse off the dip, just let the birds air dry...a fast cool down and drying in this heat.

Jcatblum, Can't imagine the stress of building a home and having to move that quickly! Sorry to hear about your Speckled Sussex.

Have a great day everybody!

What are you looking for? Egg color, egg-laying only, colorful birds? Coop size varies depending on whether you are getting bantam hens or large fowl.

I have 3 Black Copper Marans hens and a Black Australorp hen available, also some black sex-link pullets that will be laying in about 3-4 weeks. I live on the east side of Tulsa, just north of I-44. You can PM me if interested.

Thanks guys! since i have some liquid ivomec, will try that first, and bathing isn't a bad idea either. Will it be safe to give a recovering bird ivomec? Captain is gaining strength, not completely clear in his throat, but getting it sprayed 3 times a day, and i clean it out when i can, he isn't too thrilled with me messing with his throat now that he is feeling better.

is there anyone near muskogee that can move a dead fridge for me??

Ours gave up the ghost and dave can't move it far with his knee issues- this has been a heck of a month- we need to get a new brake cylinder for the car AND now a fridge....

Hey, modernman, sent you a PM. Still waiting for a check for an auction a few weeks ago.

jcatblum, congrats on the pups. I lost my big male GP a couple of months ago so I'm in the market for a new one. At least, I am if I can talk my wife into it. :)

Let me know if you are willing to part with one.
