***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Well, we are doing well with the egg production so far. About 4 to 5 a day so far out of 5 Pullets should get another pullet to start laying soon. These are Red Sex-links. I have heard they lay pretty large eggs. The ones they have been laying aren't real big. Does size go up as they get older?
Yes, they should get bigger as they get older. My ameracauna lays huge egg now. She is just over a year old.

I decided to join a quilt block swap here on byc, I don't usually quilt fussy little peiced patterns, but figured it would be something to do inside in the air conditioning during these 100+ days and use up some of my huge stash of fabric. Most all the fabric was from my stash I only bought one yard of the duck fabric to have enough of the right colors to complete the blocks.

Here are the two versions I'm going to do a duck and a nonduck.
What beautiful quilt blocks!

Chickens have been standing in their water most of the day. Hope we get some rain this week

Robin on Craigslist there are always people offering to haul off appliances for free.

I hardly saw the chickens today. The heat kept them from playing in the yard all day. The goats don't seem to mind the heat, nothing slows their appetite.

I am loosing hens to heat. I found one dead yesterday and today one is dying. They were babies a year ago and the summer did not affect them. Just wondering if my other two hens will make this summer. I wanted to reduce my flock but not this way!

It was 105 here today. I ran the sprinkler in the garden and let it get part of the outside pens. Sure helped with the temps there. Lost one older hen in the hen Ouse even with the swamp cooler. Had 7 chicks hatch yesterday and today in the incubator an am closely watching the Cochin hens that are broody. They have eight eggs between them that are due beginning tomorrow.
We really need some rain. The last measurable rain we got was In late May. The grass is turning dormant and yellowing.

Kass...nice blocks!

On the adobe bricks in water to keep them cool idea.....I wonder if clay pot saucers would do the same. I've got a 2 liter bottle in the freezer right now. Going to try to provide a 'cool off pool' for them tomorrow.

Good idea! I know I've got a ton of clay pots and saucers down in the crawlspace from the previous homeowners. That saves me a trip to Lowe's!

if you are home during the day, periodically dunk them ;in a bucket of water- or spray the runs down, frozen bottles help, you can put a frozen jug in front of a fan, and they will sit in front of it

I really didn't believe that there was a big difference in breeds of Chickens but my big fat hens are loving this heat and have started laying like crazy........they even chase grasshoppers when it is really hot during the day!!!
