***OKIES in the BYC III ***

What is his crop like, first thing would be to isolate him, bring him in out of the heat, observation- get some electrolites into him, he may be dehydrated- bath him, to check for mites, sometimes that is the best way to check for the little critters, try him on some wet feed too

I mixed warm water with flock raiser crumbles yesterday for him and as far as I could tell he didn't eat any of it till the evening. He's back in house today. I'm at work already so I'll have to check his crop tonight. I did check his feathers in a couple of places on his back and they appear clean as a whistle. I felt his butt and his feathers are soft and fluffy and didn't feel 'soiled'. But I didn't do a visual there. On bathing him....I can use dog flea shampoo, right? I'll get some electrolytes at store after work. I know if I get pedialite to get it without iron.

I agree that trumpet vine is extremely aggressive, but it can be killed easily with Roundup for poison ivy. I've always avoided chemicals until last year when our yard became totally overrun with poison ivy (much of it higher than my head), trumpet vine and other "thugs".

I have got to find a way to keep my momma dog cool. She has now moved her pups under the shed, but is still hot. I tried to tell DH the dogs need an AC in the dog house, but he isn't sold. Momma dog gets in the pond to cool off a few times a day. I tied to drag her inside, but she is not a house dog and doesn't like the indoors. I just feel so bad for her.

So far we have not had any losses from the heat. I did have a lavender roo that was laid over & unable to get up yesterday. Soaked him in cool water & he looked better. Will be keeping a close eye on him.

Will be nice to have cooler weather on Sunday!!!

Lost a second Black Copper Maran to the heat yesterday, so I picked up a few more misters today and set up a box fan to blow in a corner of the pen- they are all piled up in front of it so it seems to be helping! A few have figured out to stand in the water pan, the other pen has figured that out but not them. They don't seem to like the mister much yet either. But it took the other pen a few days to figure it out, too- once it got REALLY hot they learned it was their friend and now that's where they hang out all day! And no losses in that pen, either!

Mine were kinda iffy about the mister yesterday too but now they love it. They are all out where the mist can cool them all off. Now just waiting for the ducks to figure it out. I wish they would just go to the pond and swim during the heat of the day to stay cool.

Try giving momma and pups a damp blanket. Ice in her water. a pan of ice with fan blowing over it.
I tried to mist momma with a hose & she doesn't like it. Go figure the pond full of cow manure is better! She is in a location where it is about impossible to reach her unless she comes out. I am going to run an ext cord & get her a fan going. The fan I would normally use is on Tarons keets, DH is bringing a new fan home tonight.

Cockerel started standing and sitting with his neck drawn in and closing his eyes this morning. He did crow this morning but not as active as everyone else who are zipping around. This morning he looked like he was going through the motions to poop but no poop. I put him in house today in case today's heat would have been too hard on him. He's bright eyed and will become alert when I engage him but then he settles into 'sleepy mode'. When I came home he was acting normal with neck extended so put him back outside but it doesn't look like he pooped in cage either. He walked around and flapped his wings. He did the 'sleepy' thing once but came out of it when I called his name. He ate a little today. I wonder if he's constipated b/c he went through what I thought was pooping motions but no poop this morning. I thought about giving him applesauce. But not sure if I should just wait for another sign. Or if its just the heat making him this way.
Use molasses in the water, or give him sweet grain for a few days. That will loosen him up and give him the energy from the natural sugars.
