***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Artsyrobin, there's nothing in his crop as far as I can tell. No large mass or anything hard. And I looked through his feathers to his skin in several places and he appears clean. I did end up sitting on the kitchen floor giving this spoiled brat a massage about his neck and chest getting my fingers through his feathers to his skin. I'm pretty certain he liked it and probably thought I was preening him. I tried to massage him around where I thought his crop was.
He did poop today. I gave him some pedialite via a syringe and made him some crumbles with warm water which he acted hungry about. He did eat a little bit of the crumbles and applesauce I left him today. He comes and goes on being alert and 'sleepy'.

Use molasses in the water, or give him sweet grain for a few days. That will loosen him up and give him the energy from the natural sugars.

I don't have molasses but wonder if hummingbird food would have same affect. We have sweet feed in pellet form. I could probably crush/mash it.

Dusti, make him his wet mash with the applesauce and add yogurt, a little honey, and crush up a tablet of Brewers yeast. The yogurt is for the gut, the honey since you don't have molasses and the Brewers yeast to increase his K. Also keep the electrolytes going. Check around his vent for mites...that's where you will see the heaviest infestation if he has them. Yes, dog shampoo or Adams Flea and tick dip. Hope he gets better soon.

Lost a second Black Copper Maran to the heat yesterday, so I picked up a few more misters today and set up a box fan to blow in a corner of the pen- they are all piled up in front of it so it seems to be helping! A few have figured out to stand in the water pan, the other pen has figured that out but not them. They don't seem to like the mister much yet either. But it took the other pen a few days to figure it out, too- once it got REALLY hot they learned it was their friend and now that's where they hang out all day! And no losses in that pen, either!
I lived in Okla. for 30 years...heat + humidity is a tough scenario...air flow is perhaps the most important along with shade and cool water...birds won't drink warm water well at all. that box fan will do as much if not more for you since the humidity is so high...shade cloths that block up to 90% of sun's rays/heat are great....home depot....also i find my birds will not drink water with electrolytes in it...it tastes horrid...but alot of birds will drink water with original lemon lime flavor...you can offer it alone with ice in it's own pan along with water in another bowl...if the birds won't drink water with electrolytes then you risk them not drinking enough water...so it's counter productive. i hope these tips help you. i know of heat and birds as i live in Arizona

and have yet to lose one to heat.
Good luck!

He was very talkative this morning....lots of crowing. Had his neck extended out most of the time. vHe wasn't as cooperative about the electrolytes via syringe this morning as he was last night so I put some in his wet mash which I added some oatmeal to. He ate really good this morning. I made a bit watery b/c still not seeing drink on his own. Went on search party for his vent....he's got a ton of fluff on his bottom. Looks clean with no missing feathers and skin looks clean. Feather shafts look clean.
I still need to go to store to get everything listed. All I have is the applesauce. I'll give everyone a bath just for good measure. I got one of those kiddie sandboxes with a lid from a friend last night. I need to clean it up and make them a dust bath box to deter them from making dust bath holes in the yard.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

It has been crazy hot and I have been using misters and cake pans filled with ice for them to stand in and filling the water jugs with ice several times a day and been lucky so far none have died from the heat but it is a constant thing all day to try and keep them cool. We have put a water cooler in the coop along with a fan to move the cooler air around but I live in SW OK and the humidity is lower here than the alot of the state. On a bright note we got some much needed rain yesterday not much but at this point any helps, some of my babies never seen rain they did not know what it was.

Neighbor had 3 extra tons of sand from installing a pool, so I spent the morning moving half of it into the coop. Do you think chickens feel appreciation?

Hatched 8 blue copper maran chicks and one wheaten maran the last couple days, my first hatch! Have some lavender frizzled silkies due in 2 days and then a half dozen tolbunt polish due to come in the mail in maybe a week.. how does this become so addicting so quickly?
