***OKIES in the BYC III ***

got to wondering, in the short term, tight month, what can i feed as a short term alternative to the chickens, we don't have much left in the bank due to brakes and fridge but are completely out of feed... so.... what can i get the cheepest to feed the rest the month, sheesh...

Try soaked grains. You can use scratch even, just soak for a couple of days. Cabbage is usually cheap, it can be chopped up. Any vegies. Find a unmowed lawn or lot and pull some grass even. A bale of alfalfa has lots of nutrients. Save their shells and grind for calcium.

Thanks!we do the shells, ok, just got back from the feed store with calf creep- and found out you can get sweet feed pellets and mix it with the layer feed as a way to stretch the feed, it is half the price of layer feed- 7.50 for 50 pounds... so will probably be that to mix with their normal feed, the layer flock is free rangng, so hopefully they will get enough bugs to cover anything the creep doesn't... i hate these kind of months!

Sorry about your losses, glad you got your preditor. Hope your dog is okay, good luck in "dealing" w/ the neighbors dogs, sounds like you may need to implement SSS.

Glad to hear the good hatches after all your losses to the snake.

I have 3 broody girls and 15 chicks. They are in the coop and can have access to viewing the main flock, but they have a completely enclosed and lidded run to keep the chickie doos safe from the flying preditors and cats. During the day the boys generally take the flock to specific areas of the yard almost like clockwork, same spot each morning and move to the same spot each early pm etc.... Anyway I think it is sooooo cute, the boys, especially Oreo the head boy, have kept the flock near the coop all day, he (and the others boy especially) keep going in the coop and checking on the babies.
