***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi!! I am new to BYC and to chickens in general. I got my chicks 4 weeks ago and am loving every minute of it! Excited to find this thread and be able to garner advice/tips/suggestions from other Okies that know what they are doing! :)

In my short 4 weeks, I have already lost one chicken due to a snake encounter. It was horrifying to see but I took the lesson to heart real quickly and double secured every opening I could find. Ive been scouring the web and books for any information about raising chickens, but am always looking for more.

So....if you had one piece of advice for a newcomer what would it be?!

Nice to meet everyone!!

Been a while since I was on here, but I check in and try to keep up with the reading....I'm a mere 1000 posts behind.

Anyone need a welsummer roo? He is gorgeous and just started crowing. I got him from POOPS this spring. ( from Jack B I think) He is so glossy and well-fed he looks like glass in sun. I'd love for him to go to a good home. I also have a couple of banty roos...a black frizzle and a buff polish. The banties are not crowing yet, so my urgency is not as severe as with the welsummer....I am in Norman.

Thanks,

Kelly

Help! I have two roosters currently about 1 month old. I know that I am going to have to separate them and eventually give one away, but about how long do I have before they start to get really aggressive and causing problems? About what age?

Are roosters allowed where you are? How many hens would they be sharing? I have the best luck with running two roosters if they are raised together and if they are at least 8-10 hens between them. You will just have to wait to see how they get along. They will probably start sparring a little over the hens at about 6-8 months unless one decides to let the other be dominant. Sometimes roos go through a adolescent phase where they are just little jerks but they usually grow out of it by about 10-12 months.

I can have roosters where I am at. I am going to be keeping my Barred Rock Roo, however I only have 4 hens and cant get anymore chickens right now. They are in a small coop currently.
They actually get along quite well and seem to have established that the Barred Rock is the boss.

thank you--glad to know I have quite some time still to find him a new home.

All right~ glad someone has a use for him. PM me and we will make arrangements...any takers on the little boys?? the buff banty polish is too cute....

I am not coming to the Labor Day gathering, but it someone is coming from this area and is willing to transport...I would be happy to send him along....anyone interested in the black frizzle cochin? Anyone from OKC area going ? I'd be willing to meet up...PM me and I will give out numbers and addresses...I am in Norman.
