Countryhen, you can still order girls only from ideal hatchery, too. They still have several varieties of Wyandottes, Easter Eggers, Brahmas, lots more. $35 for 9-10 female chicks is really cheap. Do you want less than that?

Anyone know if Newcastle auction is on for this coming Saturday? I need to get my auction fix on...

I picked up some racks on wheels made out of PVC pipe that I think will be real handy for use around raising chickens or rabbits or maybe wire them in to make brooders out of them I got like 8 of them and only plan on keeping a couple for myself I got a mess of office chairs if anyone is interested, not really chicken related but if yer sittin' in one while surfing BYC well that changes things LOL I'll post a picture of the racks if anyone wants to see them...

Countryhen, you don't need an incubator for chicks. The starter set is a cardboard box, but I would suggest a $5.00 plastic tub due to possible fire hazard. If the chicks are tiny, line the bottom with paper towels, but if they're bigger get shavings (not sawdust). That should hold them until you can get a pen built. You need to think about what you're going to do with them this late in the season.

Oh, and you'll need a breeder lamp with a clamp. Buy the basic mamp at Tractor Supply and a red breeder bulb for it.

Sounds like exactly what I need to do, but my heart says give them a chance. The frizzle female that was gurgling is so much better today. She is eating and drinking now. I gave them a bath immediately upon arriving at our house and am wondering if maybe she got some water in her little lungs. The polish roo is actually starting to ooze some of that stuff out of his eye, still have a long way to go though. It's just difficult to give up on them so soon.

Once they are well are you going to put them w/ your existing chickens?

Just a FYI, whatever they have once they are "well" from it they are still carriers and can give it to your current chickens, no matter how long their quarantine.

I know when you look at the poor sick souls, you heart goes out and you want to make them better, just be aware you are dealing w/ birds not mammals they "play" by different rules then we do. The other thing you need to remember w/ chickens is sooooooo many of their sicknesses all look alike symptom wise, so you could be dealing w/ a relatively harmless chronic type infection, or one of the big highly contagious ones, you just don't know. Just letting you know so you can make an informed choice and go in knowing what can happen.

Thanks Kassandra for the info. I know from reading through hundreds of threads on BYC that the smart thing to do is cull them. And no they will never be put with my large egg producing flock. I have called local vets, OSU vet school, and not one person is willing to even look at them to see what I'm up against. So I'm going to give them a week. If the little frizzle has only a cold, or water was in her lungs she won't be a carrier will she?
