***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Kassaundra, I went back and pulled your fermenting info, since I was getting ready to start that up for my chickies. I found a small diner in town that happily gives away its foodgrade buckets, so I picked up several to use, since my flock is still small. I will simply rotate them in order to maintain a constant supply of fermented stock. Can you advise if this looks correct? Or did I miss a step?

Fermented Grain – Use mixed grains (use Boss more in the winter, avoid rye) in a large bucket or container with a lid (do not use metal as corrosion will leach into the mix). Cover with water and check several times to add more water, since grains will absorb. After a day or two the water levels should be approx. 1 inch above the grain. Cover with a lid and allow to sit for several days until it starts to bubble. Do not toss liquid, but continue to reuse it in rotated buckets.

Sounds great. Your chickens will think you are Julia Childs! lol

Does this bird look like a rooster? I just can't tell. It's about 6 months old and is larger than the other birds that were hatched at the same time. It has longer tail feathers but the comb is small. There are nubs where the spurs would be but I just can't tell. Looking at the body and tail I'd say roo, but the comb has me wondering. Thoughts??

looks like an EE or Ameraucana roo to me, it is definitely a roo though, you can see the pointed saddle feathers

And one more question, any idea what kind of rooster this might be? I really like him and wish I could keep him but my kids really want to keep our old roo and he has been a good protector so I won't fire him quite yet. This guy has an extra toe on each foot, feathered legs and cheek feathers. He is a real gentle bird and is being picked on by the big rooster so I'm going to need to find him a new home soon.

the way you describe him sounds like it might be a cochin/ameraucana cross? the extra toes throw me off though

I was thinking favorelle cross, they have featherd feet, and beard/muffs, and an extra toe right????? Wasn't sure about the extra toe

KK, I'd offer my own guess but that's all it would be, a guess. He is a really cool bird but I hate to see him getting picked on. When I let them out to free range he runs off by himself or maybe with one other hen but for the most part stays away from the rest of the birds.

Yeppers. I'll bring my extra buckets this weekend. I found a place in Skiatook that is happy to give them away, so I may just go and collect as long as they'll be willing to give them to me, and that way I can give them to whomever needs them whenever I hit a swap. Food-grade is a pain to get without a hookup.
