The Punk Rocker chicks are adorable, Bill lol!
I find it very odd that only 3 out of 9 of my own eggs hatched (only 4 out of 11 of the Silkies). I openedone and it was small enough that it surely died before lockdown. There also was a bad smell in the incubator from when I dropped the lid & broke some of the eggs but itwasn't as bad as a rotten egg. Is it possible that caused some sort of bacterial infection? I'm trying to get up the nerve to open another one.
I'm scared to set my Gold Laced Brahma eggs now.

How was the humidity during hatch? Usually it needs to be higher.
The smell might be evidence of a bacteria growth. Spraying with an Oxine solution and then letting the surfaces of the incubator that can be sprayed dry thoroughly will eliminate that happening. You can also spray the eggs before setting them in the incubator . Things I learned from a master at hatching.
Give them another day.

I'm 99% sure that was the problem-humidity. I opened another egg and the chick and membrane were bone dry. I've always done dry hatches but it's been so long and I got lax. I remember looking at it once and it was 17% so I'm sure that was the problem :-( I killed them and I wanted them SO bad. The 1st clue should've been that I had to peel 2 of the Silkies membrane aware from them to hatch, they couldn't get out. I feel horrible. The smell went away when i took that 1st one out, and it did smell. So that's probably the source of it.
I know it's too late but i jacked the humidity up to the 90's. I didn't see any signs of life. I learned a valuable lesson at the sake of some chicks i really wanted. Amazing that even 7 hatched.

Salmon Favarolle (?)
That was what I was thinking, probably a cross though.

Same here. It is a nice time to see wonderful people and enjoy looking at some gorgeous birds. And maybe purchase a few breeder birds that meet the Standard of Perfection.
For the new folks:
The show in Shawnee is at the Shawnee Expo Center usually the first weekend in December.

Updating because BetsyOk said it was going to be Dec 14...and just one day this year. Hope to see a bunch of you there.
Dang it!!! The 14th is my daughter's 26th birthday and I doubt talking her into going to the chicken show is going to pan out.... I will find out her plans. Maybe I can hit the show early and then spend the evening with her....Yeah! I think I can make this work. She accepts my chicken addiction and loves me anyway... hehehe!

Hi : )

Well, I don't have any birds yet, though both my husband and I had them growing up. I came to this forum to find other folks interesting in making it legal for us in OKC to keep them. We have less than an acre, but there's still plenty of room for girls and all of our neighbors I have talked to like the sound of chickens.

We have a petition being signed by folks in the neighborhood and hopefully more around town. I know there are lots of folks who keep the birds here. I hear crowing all the time, but I'd love support for making it all legal. I can send you a PDF so you can print your own petition out, or you could come by my house and sign mine.

Looking forward to meeting new folks in our area,

Anemone
Good luck!

I lost my little Serama hen would like to find one to put with my Roo . Also looking for silkie pullets or hens . What are OEGB ? After reading about fermented grain I tried it and can't believe how much my birds like it , I take a five gallon bucket into the pen and they try getting in the bucket while I dip it out .

black oil sunflower seeds
Do you have to use a mixture of grains or could I just use whole oats? Also I thought the black oil sunflower seeds had been baked, will they still sprout if they are baked?
I think I really like to do this for my birds. Good return nutritionally for the money...
