***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Just throwing this out there, just in case. Do any of you know anybody with brand new chicks who can spare one or two? With just the two, and the health of one in question, I would rather plan for the worst than have to find a companion at the last minute.

Trying to read up on what I've missed, but have skipped some for now.

We just got back from China last night, and I've not even been out to visit my chickens yet. Very tired after two weeks of walking probably 5 - 7 hours a day! Great time.

I think I saw a pen of dark colored chickens one day from the high-speed train, but other than that, the only chickens I saw at all were in the markets. This included silkies.

Hope everyone is OK. Have missed being here.

I'm thinking spraddle leg also. One of my Silkie chicks hatched with that and I kept him taped for 3 days. Are you using the bandaid cut long ways method?

China? Wow! I wonder where they keep the chickens they raise for the markets? I can't even imagine what it's like in other countries. What memories you must have made.

Welcome back! Did you bring this weather with you? awwww, probably not...its called fall in Oklahoma!

Wow @BetsyOK, I bet you have some gorgeous photos of your trip! Feel free to post a link.

And you wonderful people may have been right... it may have been something akin to spraddle leg. I don't think it was caused by slipping after the chick was hatched, but perhaps by how tightly it was packed in the egg. I left the brace on all night, and this morning I worked with it a little bit, holding it up so it could just rest its feet in my palm. It's still doing the paddling thing, but before I left for work, while I was watching, it actually raised itself to its feet for a split second!!!!! Whoooot!!!!! Happydance!

I'm still interested in finding one more baby to put with them. The Dorking isn't as vigorous as I would like to see, and I'm worried it will be just like last time.

Notice I'm not calling them by their names quite yet.

Spraddle/splayed leg almost never happens because of them slipping-that seems to just be something people keep repeating. In my opinion it happens because....it happens. We all want to know WHY something happens, but it seems with chickens things just happen because they do. Read up on fermented mash for babies. It's as simple as adding water to their crumbles. I've always fed mine "wet mash" but didn't realize you could let it set a day or 2 and it'd ferment and be even way healthier. Don't make it difficult and get caught up in details like too many seem to do, it's easy and makes an immediate difference. Look on Craigs list for chicks, there's always tons. I'd be concerned about putting strange chicks in with already weak chicks though because of disease.
