***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Went to Midwest City in the Subaru. Roads still not good except for the highways. Oklahoma City public schools already cancelled for tomorrow. I am not suprized. The district has a lot of students that walk to school and it is too cold for them if there is a wind chill tomorrow.

I lost a hen, my white Mille Fleur, :( She was very inactive yesterday so I brought her in last night but she was dead this morning. I couple of youngstershave the sniffles so they are in the garage too. Hope no others gety sick.

Sorry for your loss

We only had one loss and that was a turkey hen but she was not doing well anyway and the cold did her in.. :(

School was cancelled tomorrow for Moore. I am really glad, the roads out here are still not great and even though I have training to drive on this stuff a lot of people don't, that is the scariest part of driving in this kind of weather.

I finally got the heaters set up... Was really tired of lugging water several times a day.. I must say that once we get the coop and chicken yard moved I am having power ran to it so I don't have extension cords all over the place.

This weather does make me rethink my yard design. If I am going to have breeder pens in use during the winter I may have to set up the watering system a bit different. Humm.... Back to the drawing board, it seems....

We drove to Shawnee for a late lunch at 1:30 pm and used 4 wheel drive into Meeker but switched to 2 wheel into Shawnee. Melting will refreeze overnight so the roads will be slick in the morning...down to one lane on Hwy 18 in places. secondary roads are bad.
More snow moving in Monday evening.....

Starting the day at 6 am with a n 85 pound baby nuzzling a bottle was made much nicer with a thermos cup of hot coffee in the other hand. Calf (Norman or Bubba Sue) was rambunctious this afternoon, head butting and trying to buck. Tied an empty plastic gallon milk jug to the inside of the pen for him to bat around...took him a while to figure it out. He is much more active and alert today.

Chickens are not happy with the cold and are showing it by reducing their egg production.

Hope everyone is staying warm.

Robyn...loved the lamb diaper picture. I though about making a belly bag for him...but hubby nixed the idea...so I'm doing a load of calf laundry every day. I did use up all those disposable bed pads already.

Jean...your Christmas card should be the silkie in the tree picture!

Kass, Glad you made it home and are finally getting some much needed rest. A 72 hour shift even with two nice young men is way beyond the call!

MaryJo...Sorry to hear about your MF hen. I lost a MF d'Anvers rooster too. This stretch of cold is hard on our birds when they aren't used to it...us old folks too.

oh, dear sorry for you loss was it pearl? she was a pretty girl

I got another egg today. About 4 of the girls hung outside for most of the day and one of them was the naked neck. The call ducks came out of the spot they were hiding in all day yesterday. I put a flake of straw where they have been hunkered down at. I got one hen in the house as she seemed a little down. Her comb and wattles are pale but she's eating.

I really hope this isn't a preview of the weather we are going to get this winter.

I'm making Brunswick stew and one of the freezer cockerels is the guest of honor for dinner tonight. He even made me chicken stock for the stew. He's so generous.

I finally made it home, 72+ hours at work was not fun, even less fun was the snow, ice, and roads (which are still way bad in Muskogee and Henryetta and everywhere in between, and even less fun the bad calls involving the children. I am soooo glad to finally be home.
Glad you are home too!

Couple pictures from today.

Poof in the Christmas tree.

I've decided to name this Swedish Flower chick Kramer.
Kramer has quite a crest! Is it a boy? My boys so far have had spiky crests not at all like that onee. I have on girl who looks like she's wearing a huge hat! I'm not hatching anything from her. Her crest is just too big.

Norman...Bucking Bubba..just finished 3 quarts of formula, bucked a bit in his pen and has now settled down for the night. The 1/2 gallon bottles are washed and ready for tomorrow morning when we start all over again. Feed, play, sleep, pee, play, grooming, poop, sleep, play fight the milk jug, pee, head butt the adults, sleep, bawl for bottle, buck, grooming, nuzzle the adults who wash my face, sleep. Disposable bed pads are wonderful diapers on the floor.

Really, you expect me to stand on this little spot?

Where is my bottle!
