***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I'll be there Saturday too. l have enjoyed the show for the past several years.
Last year I purchased a Bantam Spangled Old English pullet that laced 4th in her variety from the breeder to go with a cock I had purchased the year before. His mate had died and I wanted the same quality to go with him. And my interest in d'Anvers started with a surprise gift of a lovely Black cockerel from a known breeder from Georgia.
Update on Norman. At 12:30 we took him out to the lot where we had moved his mother from the back 40. After a few moments of nose touching, she walked away from him....so into the squeeze chute she went. Norman was a quick study and she let her milk down and stood patiently for him to nurse. He was able to reach all four teats. Then when he was full, Roger milked her out....another 3.5 quarts of milk to be given tonight and in the morning. The more mother's milk that passes thru a calf, the more quickly she will accept it.. Norman ran, jumped and walked around the big lot for about 30 minutes before he wanted to lie down. Mom was watchful, but made no attempts to go to him. Back inside he is now asleep on his rugs. He will go back outside to mom again tomorrow. It is a learning curve for both of them.

Hey Carl we're setting up cages Thursday morn about 9:30 if you get bored come on out . I may not show any birds, the ones I had cleaned up went in a stress moult all my others are on the ground ,to cold to wash them. We're hoping for a good turnout weather permitting, good prize money for the juniors , good raffle and hopefully good sale birds .

Don, I have to make a run to Dallas Thursday but should be available all day and evening Friday as well as Saturday if any additional assistance is needed please call.

Yes, that's where his name came from...right now I'm calling him Bucking Bubbie as he played with me after his bottles. 3/4 gallon of formula! Norman in the movie is a heifer.

Anybody having any lambs or goats kidding? We are moving another cow up with Norman's mother into one of the front pastures. She is swelling and due next week. The weather could stress her into an early delivery. She is a seasoned cow but so was Norman's mother.

The sun is out this morning and temps are supposed to reach 33! Chickens were waiting outside their coops when I took out hot water to add to their tubs. Gave them some scratch on the bare spots.

I've been collecting eggs from the breeders in the brooder room. Some have been pretty cold. Those under a hen when I collect have been set in the incubator...25. Will know in a week if any are viable....some Delaware Bantam, Blue/Splash Rosecomb and Wyandotte. I know some refrigerated eggs have hatched for some people.

What is the coldest temp egg any of you have hatched?

I keep mine in a fridge when I only set every two weeks doesn't seem to hurt them. Still get 85% to hatch.

@cjarvis there's a thread dedicated to people who pull eggs from free range chickens out of the fridge and hatch them. I think there's even a Trader Joe's hatching club for people who buy their eggs and put them straight from fridge to incubator.

That is interesting, I use the method to prolong viability. When hatching low numbers solely for males or females I only set every-other sunday so I keep the eggs cool. when running for both I set weekly so its not a real problem.

I will be there with Birchen and Silver Blue will be nice to see you again, its been a while. Is there a lunch gathering as normal?

I'll be there with hubby and my two oldest- Grandma is keeping the two youngest which is SUCH a relief!

Probably EE. That doesn't mean anything for sex then. Cream Legbars are sexable at hatch, the girls have a very definite stripe from head to rump like an EE, but the boys have a blurry stripe with a big yellow dot on their head.

How exciting! I just love my Cream Legbars, they are by far my favorite breed.
