Ksane - sorry about your losses.

To everyone that commented on mine, thank you. I had a reply drawn up the other day but it wouldn't post. That was Honkers, named for the honking noise she made. She died from some type of illness or internal malfunction. I think she had renal failure in the end b/c she was drinking water like it was going out of style. I'll miss her following me around and talking to me through her unique clucking. Such a beautiful girl.

I know how you feel about missing the companionship of an animal- there are some animals that I know or have known that I would choose to spend my time with over some people!

So this is kinda nuts. Mom live in midtown tulsa. She had her second hawk attack today! She was able to scare it away but not before 4 of her 5 birds scattered! She located them finally by just walking aroung her yard very quietly. One was clucking softly and gave away the hiding place.

I live out in the middle of nowhere. My biggest worry are the rats. Weird. Her neighbor told her that he knows there is an owl nesting in one of the big trees in his backyard.
Dachshund are the best for rats, moles, voles and snakes. My two are the best for that and what they don't kill the plethora of cats I have take care of the rest.

I'm ready to try it with a pellet gun. I hated doing it with a knife. I looked on amazon for pellet gun and OMG it's crazy! You can get exact replicas of famous firearms. Nuts. Do you have a pistol type? how do you restrain the bird?
I would use a killing cone, that way they will not struggle as much and the blood drains out with less handling... What I was thinking is maybe we need to have a meat bird swap so we don't have to kill the birds we raise.. Just a thought!!!

Iced in here, no power. Incubator is a loss. Someday I will have a generator. ...

Don't give up I have seen eggs hatch from worse situations then that...

Something killed 5 of my hens in one of the 50x50 yards and a rooster is missing in the big rooster yard next to it. It took their heads off of all of them and gutted a couple. Ate the entire inside of 1 of them. Does that sound like a coon or skunk? They were inside their 4x8 coops but the coop doors weren't shut. Those yards are farthest-about 100' from the house. We're going to lock em` up and set the traps tonight. It got 2 of my Orps, both Frizzle Cochins and my Black Star. The rooster who's missing was my last Brown Red Bantam Ameraucana, something got his twin brother last summer.
All the birds I've gotten this year are in roofed pens.
Coons!! I HATE THOSE STINKING VERMIN!!!

That is what scares me about getting back into raising chickens is the predators, i know that is to be exspected but still what an aweful thing to find when you get home and go make sure your babies are ok. Sorry for your losses.
A gun is essential part of raising chickens... That is my opinion of it..

It is so hard to lose a fur and/or feathered friend.. It is a pain that does not go away easily... There are some that can never be replaced..

So we finally got power back today after being without for almost two days... Fortunately I was prepared, we have the propane heater, I filled water jugs and we have lots of candles and lamps. I am really glad we have power back though...
The ice on the trees in the sun was beautiful today!!! I did not take any pictures but just enjoyed the view...
Hope everyone weathered the storm okay!

But they are DEADLY on chickens, VERY VERY HIGH prey drive and a single mindedness that is beyond belief!!!!!!

KSANE SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSSES.

Last year we lost two hens with their heads missing. Hubby said possums usually do that, and coons will just kill and eat the insides out, usually. Anyway, it turned out it was a possum; I can't stand them, besides killing our birds they kill horses because they are the main hosts for epm.
We don't show them any mercy when they show up around here.

My friend in Colorado lost all her hens. The tracks were coon and she trapped two. They just killed most of them and only ate a couple. I only thought they killed to eat. Guess I was wrong.
One of my mixed breed roos I was raising for the freezer didn't come in tonight when we locked up. It always seems when the weather is bad the predators come out. Guess they have to eat too, just wish they would find enough wild prey.

Oh Ksane, I'm so sorry you lost your chickies!

Head off and gutted... skunk, weasel, mink... all those types are more likely to just take the head.
