***OKIES in the BYC III ***

EDIT: Please pray for me all... I am in SO much trouble. I finally figured out my ultimate favorite breed (a little late now and feeling a bit obsessive. HA!). If anyone knows anyone that has any standard size Cochins that they want to sell, I might be interested. I would actually like to trade one of the buff girls I just got from the auction if someone has another color I'm looking for... just putting that out there in case you or someone you know is looking for a pretty buff 8 mo old pullet... now to search for an OK breeder... here goes that chicken math again!!!

I still have the cockerel if someone wants him for FREE ... just don't tell my husband I said that.

Welcome to the world of fluffy butt love!!!

I started with bantams and have graduated up to giant cochins... They are lovely... So big, so calm, so fluffy!!!!!

Im sure my expression is one like a kid in a candy store...

When you cross with the Wyandotte do they still have all the fluffiness? It will be awhile until I get any eggs. The temp in our house fluctuates too much and made me bite my nails and lose sleep with my last ones. Do you have any pics of the girls though? Are they just as cuddly? I found with the ones we got they are going to be super sweet. I can get more than an arms length to them without them running. I looked at different pics of Cochins last night and I'm dying to find calico and Colombian. I don't know genetics very well but what would you get if you crossed a SFH and Cochin?
So, enough with my mindless before-morning-coffee rambling...

I will probably go with getting some splash from you and maybe black. I just love them!
I will have eggs and chicks around the end of February, first part of March!!!

~~I finished my Weeping Angel block, I am so excited w/ how it turned out!!!!!!!! Well over 300 pieces and most all my points and matches are perfect!!!!!!!

Wow!!! That is lovely Kassandra!!! You did a fabulous job!!! I know there have to be some web sites for us whovians, you should post pictures of them there...

Yep, as per suggestions, we think the male goat is going to be BBQ at some point this spring. Our only issue with it is that he is a rare fawn color so I'm torn between selling him and cooking him. I do love a good BBQ goat. Plus my hubby wants him to mate our girl before he goes away and we have NO idea how to tell if she's pregnant or not.

So, I've taken up writing as a full time career now and my chickens and goats and turkeys are now the star distractions in my day. I figure I can fool myself by writing a post on here ... that way I'm "writing" while still indulging my poultry passion.
big_smile.png
Now if I could only figure out a way to make it count towards my total production for the day ... Maybe I should start writing a column on poultry keeping since it seems to be a popular pastime these days. I could have quotes from all of you on various matters ... we could call it the Okies Poultry Ranch Roundup ... or something ... I'm just winging it. Hey, that might be a good name "I'm just Winging it".
Not sure you want to pass on the genes of a goat that is aggressive...

Anyone know where I can get a bag of Kelp meal ?
Thanks
Are you wanting use kelp meal in your chickens' feed??? I have heard it is very high in protein... If you find where to get it and it is not horribly expensive let me know where you find it cause I would like to add it to my birds diet... Spoiled brats!!!

So here's my ?, will the 2 little Cochin pullets be okay with a straight run of NN until aprox. 8 weeks, and with the NN pullets until they join the big flock at 12+ weeks?
As long as they are not too different in size it usually is not an issue...

absolutely they are slower to mature- i think 2 years to attain their full weight, right nana?
LF Cochins take quite a while to fully reach their full weight and size.. and Robin you are right it usually takes 18-24 months.

Okay Okies, I have a question.

I am placing an order on MM (this will make my second order for 2014

), These are mostly meat birds so at probably 3 to 4 weeks they will be put in a completely different area than any other chicks. I decided (you know how that goes right?) I wanted some hens to breed the Partridge Cochin I ordered for my son....

AND I want my first batch of NN!!!
I plan to cull the males in the butcher-bird pen after the CX have met the freezer at 6 to 8 weeks.

So here's my ?, will the 2 little Cochin pullets be okay with a straight run of NN until aprox. 8 weeks, and with the NN pullets until they join the big flock at 12+ weeks?
In my experience, yes, all of those chicks will brood fine together.

Not very sure what is wrong with my lav orp legs but I have come close to figuring out what is wrong with the buff cochin cockerel foot. Actually it's feet. I was watching him walking today and I noticed he brings his feet up high to his belly. That explains why there were feathers missing. I looked at his feet much closer and what I thought was mud and poo is poo, blood, scab and whatever else to coat parts of his little feet. Oh the poor dear. It breaks my heart because some of his toe tips look like frost bite (black tips). I don't know what to do now. I was trying to find him a home but now I don't want to give him to just anyone. My neighbor kid wants to give him to his cousin but I know the poor thing will get no care. Would any of you consider this to be a situation to cull a rooster? I wish I took pics after soaking them in some Epsom salt water. A few cracks that were sealed stared to bleed and I just don't know how to get that thick scab off without actually cutting it off. No wonder he was limping around. The two pullets seem just fine though...
Would it make a difference if I let the auction people know what condition I have gotten these chickens in? I am just so disgusted that this is more than one consigner that has put in chickens in such a sad condition.

I am just so sad for that poor boy.

Does anyone else find that the cochin develops slower than other standard sized birds?
That was another concern I had! Being such large birds, I expect them to develop like my JG did, and they were quite a bit slower to mature than say my RIR. I always research my breeds well, but NN are one of those that I can't find a ton of information regarding their temperament, development and such. I also have learned to expect a bit more aggression from hatchery birds than breeder (my RIR's and even JG were a total shock as far as aggression
rant.gif
) Thanks for the input.

I am excited for my new additions, my first batch is set to arrive around Feb 24th from Meyer!

Three more EE pullets, a threesome of Buff Brahmas, and some more production layers + my son's little Cochin roo!!!!
