***OKIES in the BYC III ***

So I think I am coming to the end of my hatches. With three different dates this is what I got:
Silkies 2/5; Cream Legbar 3/5; SFH 6/10; Olive Egger 6/6; Light Sussex 9/10
I think the failure to my first two hatch dates was the humidity. I noticed my hatch rate went up with the humidity increase in this other incubator as it hold humidity a lot better than the Little Giant. Both are Styrofoam but I need to figure out the differences. I think the lid is a bit taller on this farmers innovators (innovation???) so it seems to hold humidity better. I don't know. It has me scratching my head. I can't figure out the hatch rate for my SFH. The other two breeds were popping like pop corn and the SFH were much slower to get going and I still have 3 eggs in the incubator of them. I don't have much faith in them. I snatched them up and tapped on them to see if there was any movement or peeping and there was nothing. One was dead I just know. I put that one to the side and sure enough it was dead. I candled and didn't see movement in the others but there were some veins so I left those in the bator. I have one more Sussex egg but I don't have much hope for it either.

One Olive egger has a splayed leg. I put the hobble thing on it and it doesn't seem to be helping much. It keeps pulling that one good leg inward and jumping instead of walking. It was using its wing to push up but has gotten stronger and better at using that one leg. Anyone ever have this? I read about it but don't know if I am doing it right...

Now to finish up on this hatch and start on three more hatches for a friend... with one already in lockdown... almost done!

Question: Does anyone on here hatch eggs for others? I ask because I am going to get 5 eggs and don't trust this incubator (not using the one that I got a better hatch with) or thermometer for this bunch that I really need to get a better chance of hatching. If anyone does let me know what you charge and if you are close by. I would appreciate it!

wow really do all peafowl to that? That is awesome it thought they were just lawn ornaments
I don't know if any other peafowl honk at hawks like Piaget does.. She is really an exceptional hen in so many ways, so it could just be that.. Piaget will be 6 years old April 16th.. I have had her since the day she hatched, and I surely love that bird..

The warm weather has the critters coming out to play. My dogs have been making a fuss & chasing varmints since sundown. Maybe my chickens will decide to lay some eggs this wk.
Me too. Those girls need to be earning their keep. Of course I have a hen who has been sitting on eggs through the cold weather. Tomorrow I check to see if any of them are viable..

True5 I may sound like a broken record but give the splay legged baby some poly-vi-sol vitamins (without iron kind). It does wonders. Hobbles are hit and miss in my experience, sometimes they help sometimes not.

Leah update- my hen who was depressed after losing a chick 2 years ago to a predator, well whe finally when broody, here she is with the babies- they are inside due to winter- i have 3 girls and 5 boys- most the boys will go to corals clinic unless anyone wants them for breeding, there are a couple full delaware boys, the others are crossed with andalusion

dotte/andalusion girls- they are super friendly

his stance was so cute!

I just love mamas w/ babies. I can watch them all day. I am addicted to chickens, but since I'm not in it to make money, I way prefer to put eggs under a broody hen. Until this cold weather I have always had 90 to100% hatch rate. And this time I had a 99% on one and only 50% on the other two, but I did give them small pullet eggs, which I know now not to do. I should try to find a way to sell eggs. I give over 200 or so every few weeks to th neighbors and then the rest to needy families. Nut at the rate they've been eating I might be a needy family. LOL HOW DO U TELL THE SEX SO YOUNG.? I'm getting better just by the posture when they're a few weeks. I'm just so afraid to vent sex them in case I hurt them, but it would be nice to know.

Do peafowl need to have mates or do they do ok by them selves. My brother had one when I was a kid, but I don't remember much except it would always get on the front porch and make messes. But a very sweet bird.

My Splash Marans pullet is laying 5-6 eggs a week and my Ameraucanas are laying sporadically but all my Cochins are still on strike.

Has anyone heard of splash wyandottes? I got what I thought were siblings and two of the 6 birds are not blue laced red wyandottes. Here is the splash pullet: Here is her again but with a 'black' cockerel hatchmate laying below her: So is this a real color for these, or just a mistake? Eitherway, I think she's beautiful!
She's adorable! Splash is one of my favorite plumage patterns. I love the soft greys and whites, as if they're chickens in vintage photography.

so i wonder which one you go by state or fed?

I go by "Tonys Law", that has preference here.
